[By Telegiaph.J London, July 18. Mr Quelcb, Socialist, has been committed for trial on a charg9 of inciting operatives on strike to assault; firemen. .The Hon. E. Hubbard, the Chair|kj\ of the Amalgamated Dock CompanieSy was examined to-day before the Commission on Labor, "Te-, explained -that., the Dock were not hostile to \b.e they certainly resisted the exclusion of '■ non union men, and at the same time would not allow Union firemen. The corn labourers in Dublin who struck have been defeated, and are returning to work. Sir John Lawes has given powerful evidence before the Labor Commission. .. He denied that the Shipping Federation was hostile to the Unions, and stated that half of the registered Federation labourers were Unionists. Washington, July 18. The Hon. W. A. E. West Erskine, member of the South Australian Upper House, in the course of an" interview at Chicago on the labouc question, said the recent strikes had become calamitous to Australia. Excellent sugar estates and mines had been abandoned owing to the behaviour of the agitators. The growth of the Australasian debt was alarming, and one fourth of the loans bad been invested in unproductive channels.
