The Prohibitionist.
(to the editor). t Sir, —Undor the above heading ap- ( pears amongst other stupid passages : £ —" The rank Toryism of those senti- 1 ments ot the Hon. John JBallance's, etc." Mr Ballance had said something that did'nt quite please the person who I writes the Prohibitionist article in 1 your columns, and he is called a Tory. 1 Bhouldlike to ask your prohibitionist friend to calmly consider who, politically speaking, are the real friends of temperance. We know that your friend across the way declined to give a Prohibitionist column " for the love of God," and he is a Eadical. We know that you gave the space, and I am sure you are not a Radical. At least I always find you standing up for the rights of property, law and order, a.id you have respect for religion. And this is the Tory plank. We know that the objects of the Tory party in England in giving compensation was to reduce the number of public houses. It is said that extremes meet, and they certainly do in Radicalism. If you want to find a pure and unadulterated Radical, you will find him shouting either at the public house bar or in an 1.0. G.T. Hall. In the same article it is stated " That John Bull paid the same owners £20,000,000 which ought to have been paid to the slaves." To be consistent, Prohibitionist would pay compensation to the drunkards, and ia that case I am thinking there would be some broken pledges and some claims put in by the 1.0. G.T. If really wants to do good, let him throw his Radicalism overboard and follow on the lines of the Tory party and become temperate in all things. I am, &c., Temperance.
