From the return it is seen that the export of wool has increased in value from £1,606,144 in 1871 to £4,159,599 in 1890. The amount representing the export of all kinds of grain in 1871 was £164,087, and it increased year by year to 1883, when the value was £1,808,720 ; it fluctuated somewhat from 1888 to 1889, when the amount exported represented £970,659, and the next year (1890) saw the value of the grain export rise to £ 1,009,111. The value of the flax export in 1871 was £90,611, and two years later (1878) it reached £148,799. For the following six years it gradually decreased till its exoort only came to £7874 in value, but from 1880 to 1888 it again gradually mounted up till £75,269 was reached, and the subsequent couple of years (1889-90) saw the returns for the export of flax reacli £361,182 and £381,789 respectively. Kauri gum shows a more or less steady increase from £167,958 in 1871 to £378,568 in 1890. Ofchedairy products, butter and cheese, there was I £16,449 worth exported in 1871, and the returns show a heavy decrease for the following five years,butin 1877 the export was valued at L 40,171, in 1878 atL21,479, while in 1879 the small sum of L 2259 represented the total export. In the following years it increased by leaps and bounds till L 207.687 value was reached in 1890. The export of frozen meat only com- J menced in 1882, when its value was represented by L 19,830. Since then the frozen meat export has increased in a phenomenal manner, the output in 1890 being valued at L 1,087,617, or an increase of oyer L 300,000 on the previous year, 1889. The export of gold has decreased from L 2,788,368 in 1871 to L 751.860 in 1890. The return was ordered to be placed on table at the instance of Sir John Hall.
