At the inquest on the body of the infant child of Elizabeth Stewart Baxter, of Auckland, the jury returned a verdict that tho. child was prematurely born, and that it died through the ignorance or inability of the mother to properly attend to its wants without assistance ; and that when assistance had arrived they neglected to use tho usual remedies that might have saved the child's life. The coroner pointed out that the word "they" was used without indicating who was meant, and whether it was wilful 01 not. The jury asked if it was their duty to decide the point. The coroner agreed to accept the verdict as brought in. The usual weekly meeting of the Phoenix Lodge 1.0. G.T., was held in the Temperance Hall on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., Sis Warner V.T., presiding. Two candidates were initiated to membership. A number of visitors who had been invited attended, and at 8 o'clock the meeting was thrown open. A very enjoyable social was held, songs biing contributed by Sisters Campbell and Bentley, and Bros Bragginß, Cole, anl Ewißgton ; recitations by Sister Warner, and Bros Hopwood, Mawhinay and Kwington; and a selection on the 'fairy harp' by Bro T. Williams. Refreshments provided by the brothers of the Lodge were handed round during the evening. The meeting closed at half past nine.
