England is becoming alarmed at the exodus of destitute Hebrews from Russia, as large numbers, are seeking refuge in Great Britaiu. This move ment has assumed such proportions that it is termed the " Hebrew inva sion of England." A. Destitute Alien Law, similar to that passed by the United States, is clamored fqr. The attendance at the labour meetings in Hyde Park on May 23rd was estimated at 20,000 to 80,000. John Burns, Thomas, (President of the Dockers Union), Benjamin Tillets, anl Mr Graham, Socialists and M.P.'s, were among the speakers. Beports on May 10 from the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys mention that the Hessian fly bad appeared. Early on the morning of May 19th, the Liverpool police found in the Mersey, a sailor's clothing bag, in which was the dead body of a boy, apparently not over fifteen years of age. The boy had been but recently killed. His throat was cut from ear to ear, and his legs severed from his body. A new knife and saw were found with the remains. On the body was painted tha name of "Tom Girvin," but further than this thpre wasno clue to the murderer, the police searching all the shops and sailors' resorts for ?'Tom" or some-person who might know him or his bag, as a means of discovering the perpetrator.
The story, of whioh so much was mads by London and Paris papers, concerning the fate of the naturalist in Algiers, that he was smothered and eaten by the locusts, is pronounced by the reported victim himself, per telegram, " The funeral joke of a wag." Twenty-one. horses, and seven carriages were despatched from Windsor on Tuesday, May 19th, to Balmoral for the Queen's use during her stav in Scotland.
Diptheria prevailed to such an extent in Copenhagen that on May 24 the schools had to be closed as a precaution against the further spread of the epidemic; but the mortality is increasing. Fever was raging among the officers and sailors of the British fleet at Malta on May 28rd. An average of forty officers and men are sick on board each vessel. The naval hospital is overcrowded with sick sailors.
Charles A. Dixon, hailing from Peublo, Colorado, was arrested- in New York on May 6th for threatening to kill Jay Gould. The man, who was evidently a crank, is a mem., ber of the organisation known ag "Chrisfs Followers," the purpose oj which is the-equalisation of money and its proper distribution. ' A magazine exploded on May 13th at Donaghadee, near Belfast, shaking the* whole town and breaking many windows, supposed to be the work of dynamiters. The police are hunting a suspected American.
