MASTERTON HOSPITAL.
Special KiotlaffofTtuitNi. A special meeting of the Masterton Hospital Trustees was held on Thursday afternoon in the Council Chambers, Present—Messrs J. 0. Boddington (obaiiman), W. H. Beetham, J. B. Keith, B. P.JPerry, and Rev. W. E. Paige. The bpnesa of the meeting was to adopt report and balance sheet. A letter was read from Mr Joseph lorns apologising for non-attendance and tendering his resignation as a Trustee in consequence of bis intention to permanently reside at Pahiatua. In taking this step he desired to state that he would always look back with pleasure and pride upon the Institution and the Trustees with whom he had been associated with for so many years, and that be should always have the interests of the Hospital at haart and endariroar' to assist its advancement in'Wkat* ever district ho resided. In accepting the resignation with regret the Chairman referred to tho many years Mr lorns had boeu a Trustee and committeeman from the foundation of the Hospital in 1876, and he felt sure he was expressing the unanimous feelings of the Trustees in saying they would all regret to lose hia valuable I assistance which in the past bad been
of bo mnch service to the Hospital and moved that their appreciation be recorded on the minutes and a copy sent to Mr lorns. Mr W. H. Beetbam, in seconding the . resolution, said it was not necessary to-make any farther remarks upon jjjjj lorns' services as the Trustees he lu«w fully appreciated them. The resolution was carried unanimously. The following report and balance sheet were then read and adopted:— Eeport ot Trustees ot Masterton Hospital for year ended, march 31st, 1891.
The Trustees of the Masterton Hospital, in submitting their annual report, and balance sheet, have pleasure in acknowledging an increased measure of support from the piblic, the subscriptions for the pSfcyear having amounted to .£243 15s 8d against £227 14s 5d in 1889-90. At the end of the financial year there was a balance on hand of £157 43 Bd, and the amount dus for subsidy by the Government was £lB7 8s lid, the liabilities being £54 4s. The available assets, after deducting liabilities, thus amounted to £240 8s 3d against JE22tejta 7d on 31st March, 1890, thelßult of the year's transactions being"an increase to the funds of the hospital of £lB 18s Bd. This result must be looked upon as a satisfactory one, but the Trustees wish to point out that had tbere been no increase
\tfPsubscriptions and patients' fees collected the year's revenue would not have been sufficient to meet the year's expenditure, The number of patients admitted to the hospital daring the year 1890-91 was G7, agtinst 48 in 1889 90, a very large increase, which has necessitated a icorrespbnding increase in _ the expenditure. It is evident that ii the cost of maintenance ■is to increase either the volume of voluntary contributions must continue to grow or, the Trustees will be unable to maintain the institution on its present basis, and a special rate will eventually have to be levied. The Trustees recognise the liberality displayed by many of the subscribers. They believe that that liberality will be continued and they trust that other seWei"s who have not hitherto contributed will be induced to do so, when the claims of the Hospital are brought under their notice. The Trustees especially lookfor an increase in contributions from the Forty-Mile bush.Therecan beno question that the Trustees do not get the support to which they are entitled from that quarter. Nearly half of the patients admitted during the past year came from the Bush, and only £2B 7s or 11$% of the total subscriptions was contributed by Bush settlers. Since 1889 the Pahiatua County Council baa Recognised the claim of the Hospital on that district.by making a yearly donation of £ls, which the Trustees desire specially to acknow* ledge. They, would point out at the same time' that nearly 24% of the total number of patients treated during the past year came from the Pahiatua County, while only £lO 5s was received in subscriptions from residents there. For some time paßt the Trustees have been giving their special attention to the question of the collection of patients'fees, and every individual case has been considered onTOmerits. The sum of £lO7 183 has been collected from patients for the past year as against £7llßs €d hi 1889-90. The proportion to total expenditure was 16% in 1890-1 against 14% in 1889-90, a -result which shows at least some degree of progress in the , right direction. On Slsfr March, 1890, there were 7 patients in the Hospital; 67 have been admitted during the year, 65 have been discharged, cured, or relieved ; 5 hare died and 4 were under treatment on 81st March last. Of "the total number of patients admitted 31 were suffering from the effects of accidents. The average stay of each patient in the Hospital during the year was 81 days and the average daily .lost of maintaience was 5s Sid. The Trustees are desirous of expressing their appreciation of the professional services of Dr W. H. Hosking. the medical officer of the nstitution. They have also pleasure in recording the efficient manner in which the duties of custodian havebeen per formed by Mr John Williams. The Trustees take this opportunity of conveying their thankajo the proprietors of the N.Z. Evening Press, Evening Post, Waibabapa Daily, and Wairarapa Star, for the free supplies of copies of their papers, and they also tender their acknowledgments to the ladies and gentlemen who have
presented books, illustrated papers, linen, and other articles. The usual list of subscribers is appended. At the annual statutory meeting of contributors held in January, Messrs J. B. Keith and B. P. Perry, the retiring Trustees, were reelected. Mr 3. C. Boddington was re-elected Chairman at a/subsequent meeting of the Trustees. Sixteen meetings of the Trustees have been held durißg tie year, the Attendances being as follows: —J. C. '9bddißgton (chairman), 16; Joseph lorns, 15; Bev. W. E. Paige, 13; B. P. Perry, 11; J. B.
