MAURICEVILLE NOTES.
[by. rustic. I
An epidemic of an alarming charac* ter, which threatens terrible havoc amongst bachalors and spinsters in the Forty-mile Bash, seems very prevalent just now. I refer of course to the marriage mania which is so rife in the community at the present time. Whether it is the unsatisfactory conditions of the late census returns, or whether both sexes are animated with the very laudable desire to fill up the gaps in the ranks caused by the exodus of our population from the colony, I am not in a position to state. But certain it is that marriage is the order of the day, and if it continues much longer there will not be enough bachelors left in the district to form even a School Committee. ' If it should come to that, my name is Walker, and then what a loss to the community. It fills me with sadness when I see the flower of both sexes carried off in this manner, some of them certainly old enough to know better; beautiful girls, on who's* 1 angel brow the hand of sorrow has not left its coroding trace, all tending in the one direction. I notice one thing in connection with this matter which I regard as a sign of the times Worthy Mr Bagge, the Registrar,', seems to enjoy a grinding monopoly of the trade from this district in this particular There seems to be a lack of truei religion in this community, arising no 'doubt from having the word preached too frequently by men whose actions are at variance with what they preach. And then, they say Mr Bagge is such a nice old gentleman, which I have no doubt he >s. .■■''.;'. J , "' •;■
While on this subject I may mention, that one of our most prominent business ijneni, whose; nuptials about to' be celebrated in ihe near future, has been so harrassed with questions as to when the affair is coming off that he hit upon the bold expedient of 1 writing a public notice and placing it in - the "window of the temporary Post Office containing all the necessary .information on the subject, together Jwith-a liberal invitation to all and sundry whom it might concern to come round and tiukettle him> This is certainly a new departure, and one that has many points to recommend it to thinking men.
There is to be a meeting of householders on Monday next, 22nd inst., for the purpose of electing a School Committee for the Mauriceville East sphool, the last election baing upset on account of the action of-the late chairman in refusing ta accept the nomination of one of the householders with whom he.was. on bad terms. The Board has very wisely taken the matter into their own hands, and by this means the householders are at length rid of an incubus which has caused much discredit; to this particular school, and though I am afraid that .there may he some lively skirmishes on Monday next, so true it is that (the evil that men do live after them) I think I can prophecy that this election will be the beginning of the end of all our school troubles.
The contract for the completion of the Dreyer's rock road is proceeaing rapidly. The contractor, Mr Britt, seems determined to complete the work as soon as possible, to judge by the large number of men he employs. The contracts for .the extension Qf the Wangaehu and Barton's toads are also under weigh, bossed by the genial and the energetic C.arr respectively. I need hardly say that the making of these roads will be an unmixed blessing to the community.
