CORRESPONDENCE.

A STRANGE JOBILEEi . (To the Editor,) ; ; v ,J' v ;

Sib,—la my earlydajsl was led to undeistand from the pulpit that "hell" was a most uncomfortable plaoe, and waa warned by the minister to avoid'qualifying [myself- for becoming in inhabitant 1'- am glad to know that I have been misdirected, as I find tbat the Ravi Mr Williams, Timarn, at a. prohibition meeting stated that a jubilee had been helU|[ .the depth's of Hell over, the the eleotions for Licensing; Oommittees. He omits to .state who presided. I am, &c., , Orthodoxy. SUNDAY DUINKING IN MASTEUTON.

(To the Editor.) Sib,—lt was stated the other day that notfqjdJHMon had been arrested for drunkenness in the streets of Mastertbn during the paßt year. From personal observation, and from what m«iy others saw yesterday, I am disposed to think that, your statement must simply be.a satire on the. apathy of the police. The scenes of drunkenness in this town yesterday (Sunday) \we very saddening to any man who has the moral . well-being; of the yoiing ■. at heart. During the day as many as four drunken men were seen . reeling about in Chapel and Hall Btreets, almost under the shadow of V the police station, and yet no notice was taken of them. It is well-known to some of the iiiosnsing Committee where one of those men. obtained his drink, for the house was seen to open its doors to him at 8 a.m. I would remind the Committee of a -power vested in them by the Legislature, and which has for along time guided the notion of the . Auckland Confc mittees, viz-rThat if, in their opinion Sunday drinking is parried on or any other breaoti of the' Act' permitted, they ttiay with or witlwM a conviction refuse to renew this license. One would have thought, Mr Editor, that with the present Committee ip power tko publioauß of this town, if they had a grain of common senses would resolutely set their face, againstSuudaydrinking. I am, &o. , Job Dura, . ;
