ENGLISH. London, May 81. The Imperial Government has assured the Newfoundland Government that they will establish oourts to administer treaties, and will abstain from piecemeal legislation. Sir George William des Voeux, Governor of Hong Kong, has resigned owing to ill-health. Sir F. Napier Broome, ' formerly Governor of Western Australia, will probably succeed him.
The firm of Bobert Shaw and Sons., spinners at Bradford, have assigned their estate. The liabilities are set down at £60,000.
Mr William Lidderdale, Governor of the Bank of England, has been appointed member of the Privy Council.
Sir George Steven, formerly chair* man of the Canadian Pacific Railway, has been created the first colonial peer. Mr Robert Giffen, L.L.D., the wellknown financial writer, and one of the assistant secretaries of the Board of Trade, has been oreated a Commander of the Bath.
The Times states that the contingent of Victorian Mounted Rifles has won golden opinion's by their discipline and smart work. They have beenspeoi. ally invited to assist in the ceremony of trooping the colours.
The trial of the baccarat oase began this morning. The court was crowded with members of the aristooratio class, among whom was the Prince of Wales.

St. Petersburg:, May 81.
The Jewish doctors in the Russian army have been informed that they must either adopt the orthodox faith or resign their positions, and it has been decided not to permit any further admissions of Jews to the army. June 1. A society has been established at Odessa for the purpose of assisting Jews who have been ordered to quit the country to emigrate to Great Britain. It is estimated that 60,000 Jews will be landed in Great Britain in the autumn. Berlin, June 1.
A central committee has been formed here to assist the Jews expelled from Russia.
Sofia, June 1. The Bulgarian Government has ordered 40,000 of Austrian-Manlicher repeating rifles from Vienna, whioh are to be delivered by September.
Paris, June 1. Letters have been discovered which prove that M. Turpin, the inventor of melinite, had offered to sell the secret of his invention to the German Government before he offered it to Sir William Armstrong and Co. The Chamber of Deputies has decided to admit raw hides free. Odessa, June 1.
English and German syndicates have purchased all the available corn supply here.
Valparaiso, June 1. The Republic of Bolivia has de. cided to recognise the Chilian insur gents.
Bolivia has offered to assist the Chilian rebels, on condition that its debt to Chili is cancelled, Oiiawa, May 81. Owing to the very severe illness of Sir John Macdonald, the Premier, the Dominion Parliament has ad* journed. The medical advisers of the Premier report that he has only a few hours to live.
Boenos Avres, May 81. A renewed financial crisis has taken place here. June 1. In consequence of the financial panic there has been another run on the banks. Gold is at a premium of 328.
Capetown, May 81. The Portuguese authorities at Massi Kesse have ordered all Europeans except Portuguese to quit the country.
Aloiebs, May 81. Algeria has beea visited by a serious locust plague, and everything green is being eaten up. Calcutta, June 1.
Two of the Manipur. officers have been sentenced todeith for complicity in the murder of Messra Quinton, Grimwood, and others.
