On Wednesday last our local contemporary published the following statement:—
We have been asked to publish a temperance column weekly for that priestly recompense " the love ofGod," and although compelled to decline the request lest the infliction of a pariodical waterspout might try the constitution of the news loving public, we have endeavored to meet th 6 cravings of the abstainer, with a judicious mixture of temperance oUppings. It now appears that our contemporary was compelled to decline the request, not out of consideration for the constitution ot a news loving public, but out of a regard for his own pocket, because the.temperance people would not comply with a demand for an annual subsidy of £9. It was a question of pelf rather than of principle with him.
