Masterton Licensing Election,
HERE are "cranks" of all sorts, "vegetarian cranks," " hydropathic cranks," and "homeopathic cranks," but the woret crank of all is the dyspeptic TEMPERANCE CRANK, who cannot take a glass himself and is determined that no one else shall h v one. He resembles that illustrious crank "Professor Cockle" who holds that all the diseases and misery on the face of the globe will disappear if people will only swallow his ANTIBILIOUS PILL. The prince of Temperance cranks is PROFESSOR PHCEKIX of this town who tells the people what wonders he can do with his compulsory and evacuatory PROHIBITION PILL. This is an Iron pill and a bitter pill, one hard to swallow, but PROFESSOR PHCBNIX, if the public will only close its eyes and open its mouth, undertakes to ram it down. He has no connection with PROFESSOR ANTt-NICOTIANA, Who says that the country is going to the dogs because it spends £397,468 13s 2|d per annum on stinking tobacco. PROFESSOR PHOENIX says:— " His own Pipe must not be Prohibited," but that if the people will let him close all the hotels and run ELKINS.TOMMi' THOMPSON, and PHILLIPS out of ! the town he will put out OTHER PEOPLE'S PIPES. Voters of Maßterton beware of Cranks. Don't boycott anybody, especially Don't be led away by mysterious circulars slipped under your doors. GIVE YODR VOTES FEARLESSLY & INDEPENDENTLY FRIDAY, MAY 29, GEOEGE HERON WALTER PERRY JOSEPH W-ILLIAMS H. E. ETON G. S. W. DALRYMPLE. Trustworthy men, who are pledged to no person or parly, aud who can be depended upon to study the good of the town, to discourage intemperance, but at the same time make proper provision for the comfort and convenience of the travelling public and of visitors to MasThese Candidaterand THESE ONLY will consider all applications brought before them on their merits, in OPEN COURT. The other Candidates have been told what to do in the secret CONVENTION OF CRANKS, And take their instructions from PROFESSOR PHCENIX.
