ALAEMING LOSS.
The population of the Colony, exelusive of Maoris, has not yet beenfT exactly arrived at, but according to the preliminary Census returns it may, we understand, be stated at 618,688. This is about 40,000 more than in 1886. N«w, the excess of births over deaths during the past five yearß arcountß to 64,168." We have, therefore, lost in population not only an equivalent to all our immigration, but also 24,000 of our natural increase. The figures (given subjeot to revision, certain information having been given by wire and a few small things being uncertain) are as followß : POPULATION.
