The Municipal party battle was well fought out 011 both' sides yesterday, the result being the defeat of the nine Renallite candidates and the return of the nine anii-Eenallite councillors. At last we have a strong united Jouncil for the borough. The opposition party, which has called itself the party of progress, but

which for years has been the party of obstruction, being simply wiped out. Good municipal government is now possible, and the burgesses have displayed good sense m giving so decisive a verdict. The vanquished made a brave struggle for place and power, but the odds were against them. There were amongst them men who were undoubtedly well qualified for the position which they sought, who will, we hope, on some future occasion secure election under better auspices. It is to be regretted that Mr Pownall should have been indiscreet enough to drag his office of Mayor in the gutter by a personal canvass on behalf of the def p ated candidates. He now occupies a singularly weak and humiliating position, and were it not that councillors are likely to be a little lenient towards his youth and inexperience he would probably have a rough time of it. Evidently he has been under the impression that he exercises a considerable influence in the borough instead of realising the fact, patent to most other other people, that he has simply been Mr Renall's puppet.
