The Borviceß of the County Engineor have beon granted for tho purpose of preparing estimates of tho cost of procuring water from tho lluamahunga for irrigating tho To Oro Ore plain. A tolegram received from Ashburton to-day states that tho Hon. W. S. Peter, M.L.C., is Boriously ill with inflammation of tho bowels.
Tho attention of buyers is directed to & tho alterations made in the advertised list of stock to be sold at Knwlyn Farm by Mr. F. H. Wood on Tuesday noxb, and also tho hour of sale. The friends of Dr. Hoakitiß will bo sorry to hear that during tho last few days ho has not progressed to tho satisfaction of Dr. MncLaughlin, who has in consequence been obliged to prohibit his being interviewed, till tho symptoms ot tetanus, with which he has been threatened, subside.
We are given to understand that the late William Croft had insured his life for £2OO some time before his doath. Not only has this amount been handed over to the widow, but the whole premiums paid have been refunded. This demonstrates yery clearly advantages of insurance.
The Greytown Literary and Dobating Society has beon formed into a Parliamentary Association. Tht>first meeting was held last night, when there was a fair attendance of members. A Governor and Speaker were elected; Messre F. fl. Wood and Geo. Wyett filling tho offices, Mr W Scale accepting the arduous duties of Clerk of the House. A division was then called for, viz, for of the present ministry or tnfflMTt, the majority favoring the present govornment. Mr Heagerty wa<j sent for and shortly afterwards announced that ho had succeeded in forming a ministry. Tho Rev E. H. Wyatt is tho leader of the opposition. A disoussion took place at the meeting of the Wellington Land Board yesterday over the letter received from the Minister of Lands with regard to the "new born zeal" of the Board. On the motion of Mr Macartkur the following resolution was passed : -"That this Board receives with regret the letter of tho Minister of Lands, in which the Wellington Land Boaid is charged with neglect of its duty in detecting evasions of the Land Act, and its action in asking for moro rangers is termed new born zeal. This Board rosolves that the Commissioner be requested to draw up and forward to the Minister of Lands and also to tho press a precis of the aotion taken by the Board in the matter of detecting and punishing evasions of the Land Act. The members of tho Board are confidont that a record of their proceedings, commencing in 1889, will show that a Minister's strictures are not borne out by f ho facts of the case, and that so from theßoard'H zoal being newborn it has been foremost amonq the Land Boards of the Colony in striving to prevent and detect brenches of the Land Aot, and has only boen prevented from carrying out its wishes to their fullest extent by an insufficient staff of suryeyors and the limited powers giyen to the Board by the present Land Act."
