A siCTOomed house in Forth fltreeK owned by Thomas Knott and occupiedr* by Captain Richardson, was totally burnt last night. The building wa» insured, for £2OO in the New Zealand office, and the furniture for £250 in the Standard.
At a public meeting held in Carer* sham, resolutions were passed rtoom* mending the newly eleoted licensing committee to close four hotels and abolish alf bottle licenses. Petition! to that effect are to bo circulated for signatures, Ikveroabgim,, May 12. Another infant has died at the Wintoo baby farm, but the Coroner, Mr Rawson, after enquiry, deems an inquest unnecessary. Oaharu, May 12. A meeting held last night to establish a Prohibition Association was largely attended and the Association was formed. Its chief planks are: Tbe total suppression of the liquor traffic, and the endeavor to secure the cooperation of all prohibitionists* The members are not necessarily teetotallers. Two petitions were lodgeiFto-day against the election of the Oamara Licensing Committees. Tbe principal objection was that the Returning Officer was not legally appointed. Waipawa, May 12. This morning, before three Justices Herbert Bergsti'om, a lad nine years of age, was sontenced to 2| hours' imprisonment for stealing two rings, valued at £2. Cbailes Golder? watchmaker, for receiving stolen rings was sentenced to one month's imprison* ment, though the Bench declared there was a possibility be had not intended to deprive tbe owner of the property. lUnUUrlal aioToaoats.
