TE NUI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

Constable Coilerton met with an unpleasant accident on Friday last. He was collecting ceusus papers up the Te Nui Valley. On returning late at night, his horse trod in a rabbit hole and fell on the Constable, crushing his left foot. He managed to ride down to Masterton and smv Dr Hasking, who ordered him op sick leave for a fortuight. Mr Whiffin, of Herbertville, also had a narrow escape on Monday last. He was riding into Te Nui about 10 p.m., when his horse shied in the flint cutting, precipitating its rider over the steep embankment, which at this place is at least a hundred feet deep. Fortunately he .vas stopped by a flax bunch, or he would have been seriously injured, or drowned in the river below.

A meeting of the Rifle Club Committee was held at the Marine Hote , Whakataki, on Saturday evening last. Present—Messrs A. McHutchon, (chairman), A Speedy, J B Osborne, and J Mcintosh. It was resolved to write to Messrs Castendyke and Focke, thanking them for their kindness. Messrs John Groves, J. A. Perry, and J. Schofield were elected members of the Club. It wns arranged that as soon as the new targets arrive, steps be taken to have them erected, and the new butts erected for the 23rd inst, This being all the business, the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.

The annual meeting of ratepayers for the Uastlepoint Road Board District was advertised for Saturday last at 2 p.m., but such was the apathy displayed that only two ratepayers attended, and the meeting lapsed for wint of a quorum. Considerable interest is being taken in tht coming football match, Whare* atna v Red Stars of Masterton, to lie played at Tenui on the 25 th inst. The V/ha ream as are going in for regular practice, and most of the members are in good form. Mr 11. Speedy, one of their best players, who left the district a few months ago, has roturned, and there ip great rejoicing thereat.

The Rifle Club's annual match on the 23rd is causing a stir amongst shooting men. The belt has been won alternately by a Wliakatnki and a Tenui man, and there is much speculation as to who will win it next.
