COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua County Council was held on Saturday last. Present—Crs Bolton (chairman),E. Whitcombe.Yile, Yule, Burrows, Moore, and Tylee. A quantity of correspondence was read and dealt with. The Chainnau was instructed to take the necessary proceedings against persons evading the toll. The report of the meeting of the Finance Committee was adopted as read.

The Treasurer reported : —General account, dr, L 823 Os 7d; Government grants, dr, Ll9B Gs ; Charitable Aid, dr, 5s 2d ; land fund, cr, L22G ; 8s 8d; loan account, cr, LSGB 2s 9d ; deposit account, cr, L2lB lis 3d ; interest account, cr, LBBO 19s 10d g Manawatu Gorge account, cr, L3O 7 id.

A petition was presented from

number of Mangaone Village settler a against the manner in which itww e proposed to settle the Mangaon Valley deviation. They considered the question should be settled amicably betweer the Council and Mr G. Whitcombe, and thus 3ave the ratepayers a considerable amount of money. No action was taken in the matter.

A committee was appointed to go into the matter of the necessity or otherwise of striking a separate rate over each riding and localising the liabilities (present and prospective) in each riding. The Engineer's report was read and adopted. A letter from Messrs Bell, Gully, and Izard, claiming .£B4B, the amount due to Mr A. Reese on the Makairo bridge contract, and £2O deposit, was received, but no action taken. The Engineer was instructed to proceed with the levels of Makuri Gorge from Broughton's as far as he thinks advisable and call tenders for same. It was resolved that tenders be called for leasing the Gorge toll. A general rate of f d in the £ was struck.

Several notices of motion having been given, the meeting adjourned.
