LABOUR TBOUBLES
THE EIGHT HOUR MOVEMENT. MAY DAY DEMONSTRATIONS. Paris, May 4. Workmen at Fournies attempted to rescue their comrades who were arrested, whereupon the troops fired and killed seven. London, May 4. A mass meeting is to be held in Hyde Park in support of the eight hours' movement. Twenty-one Durham colliers have been sent to prison for absenting themselves on May Ist. Rome, May. 4.
In the riots four Anarchists were killed and 80 policemen wounded. Two hundred arrests were effected. Bkdssels, May 4.
The strikers at Liege rioted, and seyeral were killed. The collieries are now guarded by soldiers." A state of siege has been proclaimed at Liege, and a general strike is announced to take plaoe to-day.
. Thirty thousand workmen have gone out on strike at Charleroi. Madkid, May 4.
The strikers at Valladolid compelled several thousand workmen who. had remained loyal to their masters to cease work, and threatened, to sack the bakeries and.mills in the city. The assistance of police and military was evoked, and they succeeded in dispersing the mob: The Anarchists in Barcelona exploded several bombs in the streets, but no fatalities are reported. Buda Pissth, May 4.
At Orassaza the laborers attacked the military with stones and knives. The soldiers opened fire on the mob, killing several. Martial law has now been proclaimed.
Paris, May 4. The action of the troops in firing on the workmen who were attempting to rescue their comrades, is much resented in Fournies, and further rioting will probably take place at the funeral of the victims. Two regiments of cavalry have been despatched there to preserve order. The rioters are importing dynamite from Belgium and three hundred kilogrammes have been seized on the frontier. Vienna, May 4. Fifteen thousand operatives at Bielitz and two thousand at Buda Pesthhave been dismissed for refusing work on May Day. "*■
