MUNICIPAL FIRE BRIGADE.
The annual meeting of the above , Brigade was held at the Brigade I Station, Church Street, .on Tuesday, s May sth, at 8 p.m. About 30 members were present, Captain Pickering occupying the chair. ■ After the ordinary business had i been transacted the balance sheet for , the past year was read, showing that • the expenditure had been L2l 18s Gd, • leaving a credit balance of L 4 7s in the hands of the Treasurer. The attendant marks for the year wera then read, the following members being the prise winners iu the Masterton branch : —lst, SecreF tary Marsh 90 marks; 2nd, Capt. • Picketing 89; 3rd, 13ranchman i Caleb Ewington 86 ; 4th Engineer i Smith, 83. Kuripuni Branch—lst, Secretary Hatha way 76 marks; 2nd, Engine-keeper J. Butcher 75; 3rd, Lieut. Morris and Fireinaa S. Mawhinay with 70 each. The annual reports of the Masterton and Kurnuni branches ware then read and adopted. The reports cannot be published until presented to the Borough Council. The election of officers were proceeded with. Captain Pickering, in opening the business, said that although appointed by the Council he hadnowishto usurp the office of captain. It the members thought that they could find someone better qualified to fill the position he would gladly retire in his favor. After a little consideration a resolution was moved to the following effect, "That
this brigade desires to express its satisfaction in the manner Captain Pickering has discharged his duties sincr he took command, and that Gapt. Pickering retains the full confidence of the members." The resolution was carried with acclamation.
Lieutenant Baumber announced that owing to business obligations he could not again stand for the office of Lieutenant. General regret was expressed by the members At Mr BautnberVretirement. The following officers were then
elected : Masterton Bjanch—Lieutenant, J. Tait; Foreman, ■ E. Prangnell • Secretary, H. Marsh (re-elected); Treasurer, W. Prangnell (re-elected); ABst. Foreman, E. Braggius, juur.;
Branchmen, Ist, Caleb Ewington, 2nd, D. Stone, 3rd, J, Symes, 4tb, H. Branton; Mesaenger.H. Marsh, junr. Kurupuni Branch Lieutenant, W. Morris (re-elected); Foreman, S. Shepherd ; Secretary, A. Hathaway
(re-elected); Branchnjen, Ist, S. Mawhinay, 2nd, J Boagey ; Enginekeeper, J. Butcher (re elected) ; Messenger, I. Mawhinay. A resolution was carried, thanking
the .retiring officers. ( Captain Pickering thanked (he members for the good work done by them. He said the attendance • had (
been very good, and the conduot of • the firemen admirable. He paid a ( high compliment to Secretary Marsh t for the attention paid by him to the c duties of bis office.and mucb jegretted 1 Lieutenant Baumber's retirement. f A vote of thanks to the chair con- c eluded a most orderly conducted ( meeting.
