TENUI NOTES.

(Prom Our Own Correspondent.)

A meeting of the School Committee was held at the schoolroom on Monday last at 7 p.m. Present— Messrs H Bellis (chairman), Armer, Hancock, McCullagh, Norton, Stillborn, and D Speedy. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The master's report and other correspondence was received, and it was decided to leave them for the new Committee to deal with. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting.

There was a little mild excitement over the annual election of the school committee, and more interest was taken in it than has been the case for several years. A ballot box was placed at the school from 9 a.m till 8 p.m. and a considerable number availed themselves of the opportunity to record their votes during the day. At Bp.m. the meeting of householders was held. About thirty put in an appearance, andelected Mr A Stewart chairman, who called upon the late committee to give an account of their proceedings for the past twelve months. The following was theu read: — Annual report of Tenui School Com~ mittee presented to householders,27th April, 1891. "Gentlemen-At the last meeting of householders the following Committee were appointed, Messrs Armer, Belhs, Hancock, Stillborn, D Speedy, Norton and McCullagh. Mr Bellis was reelected chairman and the committee have met on nine different occasions, Mr Turkington resigned at the end of last July and Mr Pope was appointed at the beginning of September. Your committee have every reason to be satisfied with Mr Pope's management of the school. When he took charge here the attendance had dwindled down to 26. The. number now on the roll is 40, or nearly double. At the recent examination the actual percentage of passes was 79. Last year the actual percentage of passes was 71. Mr Pope has only been in charge six months, and the Inspector reports the school as being still below par, but the master's work shows that there is every prospect of the school doing much better next year. Your Committee have received from the Education Board, grants to the amountof .£l2 15s, which have been expended as follows :-B«lance owing, 9s 2d, cleaning school, £2 23 2d, fuel, £llss, repairs to building and fences, £4 5s 6d, books and maps, £1 9s 6d, Uolonial oven, £1 15s, stationery, &$ Sd, balance in hand, 10s 2d, total, £l2 15s. Amongst the improvements effected are a gate in front of the school, doing away with the old break-neck stile, cleaning out the tanks and spouting, and fixing a new colonial oven in the Master's residence. No doubt the new committee will find plenty of other improvements and repairs to effect, if they can get the funds to do them. The annual School Treat was agreat success. £ls 4s Gd was collected by subscription and £l4 lGs 9d spent, leaving a balance in hand of7s9d," The report was adopted, and Messrs B. Mason and T. Dean appointed scrutineers to conduct the balloting which was as follows : The ballot box was first opened, and the names of those who had voted during the day read out. Ballot papers were then given to all householders present who had not already voted. These papers were then placed in the ballot box, along witli the others, and after all had been checked by the Scrutineers, the Chairman gave the result as follows: —Messrs A. T. Hancock 27, K. Langton 27, A, S. Speedy 2(5, C. J. Norton 21, W. Armer 21, T. Stillborn 20, A. Nicholls 19. ffi Bellis 18, and \V. Knight 14. He declared the first seven duly elected, and a vote of thanks to the Chairman j and scrutineers terminated the proceedings. At a meeting of the newly elected Committee held immediately afterwards Mr C. J. Norton was elected Chairman, and Mr A. T. Hancookhon. secretary and treasurer. Correspqndence was read from the Secretary Education Board re electing another member, and from the head master enolosing monthly report. It was unanimously resolved to vote for Mr James Cox as a member ot the Education Board. The Secretary was instructed to obtain the school necessaries asked for by the master, Messrs A. Nichols and A. Speedy were appointed a subcommittee to examine the fences and make an estimate of the probable cost of repairs, and the Secretary undertook to see the master and get a list of repairs mentioned in his report, together with an estimate of the probable cost. Mr T, Stilborn tendered his resiguatiop, which was accepted with regret, and the appointment of a successor deferred till next meeting. This being all the business

the prooeedings terminated with the usual vote of thanks to the Chairman, I am informed that the late Chairman has taken umbrage at some

remarks of mine in your issue of tho

23rd insfc. re the Board of Education and the annual elections. I regret that this is so; no reflection was made on the late Chairman nor was

any inteudcd. Considerable dissatisfaction was caused through the Board not giving logger trine for notnina-

tious, and through the Chairman living six miles away, and those I heard complaining were several prominent settlers and the Committee's late Secretary.
