Mb Britt is generally regarded throughout this district as a very straightforward man, and, those who are acquainted with him will be slow to believe that he deserved the conviction which was recorded against him yesterday in our R.M. Court. Unfortunately he did not entrust his defence to a skilled counsel, and was thus at a disadvantage in placing his case before the Court. It is very possible that the wrong ticket which he held in his possession may have been given to him inadvertently by a railway servant, and that he has had to bear the brunt of some other person's mistake. We hope the next example which the Commissioners make will be of some ooe more likely to be actuated by a wrong [ intention than an old settler with a | well-earned reputation for integrity.
