Rome, April 8. A number of Italians hare subscribed a bronze wreath for presenta* tion to two men-o'-warsmen in recognition of their heroic conduct in saving life when the s.s. Utopia,bound from Genoa to New York with a large number of Italian emigrants on board, collided with H.M.S. Anson off Gibraltar last month and foundered.

St Petersburg, April 8. The Czar is incensed at the secret marriage of the Grand Duke Michael with the daughter of the Duke of Nassau, and as a mark of his displeasure has deprived the Grand Duke of all military rank held by him in the Russian arm v.

It is now considered certain that Mr J. W. Quinton (Chief Commissioner of Assam), Mr Grimwood (British Resident at Mahipur), Colonel Skene, Lieutenant Simpson, Messrs Cos Sins and Melville have been massacred, owing to instructions issued by Mr Quinton disclosing the hostility of the Marquis of Lansdowne, Viceroy of India, towards the usurper Jobraz. A report has reached here that Mr J. W. Quinton, Chief Commissioner of Assam, has been beheaded. It is reported that the British were repulsed &t Tamil, and it is feared that Lieut. Grant is killed.

The Viceroy of India has received intelligence that Lieutenant Grant is htill beseiged at Thonal. Three small columns are rapidly concentrating on Manipur. Information has been received here that Lieutenant Frere with a Portugese escort has been sent by the Portugese authorities to intimate to the Rhodes Company that they must evacuate their mines in Massikesse. Lieutenant Frere was arrested and sent to the Umtasas Kraal, where Mr Colquhoun, Administrator of the British South Africa Company, is settled.

Two hundred and fifty British golddiggers proceed to the Astona goldfields via Port Beira. The Portuguese Government complains that this will compel landing by force.
