EDUCATION BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was held yesterday. Present—Mr J. E. Blair (Chairman), his Worship the Mayor, Dr Newman, M.H.R., and Messrs W. C. Bucbanali, M.H.R., G. Beetham, J. Young, F. H. Fraser, and the Rev J. Paterson, Accounts amounting to £8607 4s Gd passed for payment, The Chairman stated that the bank balance amounted to £7224 8s Bd.
The annual report, as drafted by the Chairman and Secretary, was adopted. A circular was received from the Minister for Education covering the suggestion from the Otago Trades and Labour Council that school books should be made uniform and be manufactured within the Colony. Consideration was postponed. In connection with a complaint from the Educational Institute as to the issue pf circulars on the subject gi drawing certificates, it was resolved that for the future circulars should only be issued bj authority of the Board,
The granting of a scholarship to Marjory Fellingham, of Featherston, was approved, . The question of the retention of a number of pupil teachers was referred to the Finance Committee. The resignation of Mrs Benny, sewing-teacher at Cross' Creek, was accepted. The addition of a pupil teacher to the Hastweil Schppl staff was approved. Miss Gundy was temporarily appointed assistant-teacher at Manukau. A resolution' expressing sympathy with Mr George Woodward's Arbor Day scheme was passed,'inc? it was decided that teachers be asked to assist the project as far as possible. Leave of absence was granted to Miss Grace Young (Te Aro School) for a moat%, and Miss Jessie Moncrief s (Belv'ed,e.re)le'a'ye was for a month. A report was received from the -
Kaiwarra Committee adverse to th e proposal to erect a school at Khandallah, as the schools now in the district were sufficient- for present purposes. Consideration of the matter was deferred sine die.
Mr James Macara wrote, declining the offer made for the site for die proposed Masterton Infant School. The Board decided to make another offer.
Grants were made as follows: Pahiatua, for the repair of the teacher's residence, £32; Masterton, for fencing latrines, £8 ; Manukau, for verandah, &c, £6 10s ; Johnsonville, for erecting shelter shed, £2O ; Hutt, for drainage work, £9.
The Technical School Committee were instructed to define the daties of visiting teachers. Tenders were ordered to be called for repairs to the Kaitoke schoolmaster's residence, and Mr Lee was directed to report upon an application for repairs at Parkvale.
