PAHIATUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent,)

The Pahiatua Junior A thletic Club bold their first meeting on Easter Monday. A good programme has been prepared and it promises to be a success. Entries for the principal events close with the Hon. Sec, Master fl. Moore, on the 24th insfc. The census enumerators are about the district. They have a tough job before them m some places, the roan's being very bad againi It is hinted Ibat Mr Olliver, lately with Messrs Jones and Hunter, intends running a coach in opposition to the present powerful combination between here and Eketahuna. His old employers have presented him with a_very substantial mark of their esteem—a coach and four horses. Mr Olliver has been on the Palmerstotf Woodyille line for a long time and is

a general favorite with the travelling public.

The following gentlemen have been elected a committee (under the Public Libraries Act) for the Pahiatua Library :—Messrs«Black (chairman),Eedman (secretary), H Sedcole, Crosbie, Greviile, Beaumont, and Gould. t

A proposal to raise the County Clerk's salary having been made, the usual storm of abuse is being hurled at the devoted heads of the councillors. The average ratepayer can never be brought to see that anyone's salary should ever be raised. Personally, I thiuk the clerk, a hard worked officer, well worthy of an increase of remuneration.

The irrepressible Mr John Price, brickmaker, is building again, notwithstanding the adverse judgment he received last week at the R.M. Court in his action with the " Pahiatua Star." His estate is beginning to present quite an mposing appearance.
