At the Greytown Court yesterday morning before Dr Bey and Mr F. H. Wood J.P'b. a Maori named Harry King was fined £3 for creating a disturbance in the Main Btreet of Greytown on Monday evenings Our local contemporary states that Mr. W. J. Reeve was not appointed to his present position in the civil service at the request of Mr Hogg, M.H.R. Mr Reeve has certainly been fortunate in securing a position in the civil service without any apparent interest belnpr exercised on his behalf.
The train from Wellington to Palmerston North was run into on Monday evening by several truoks whioh were being Bhunted at Longburn, and three oarriages filled with passengers were thrown off the line, narrowly escaping being overturned.
A lad named Nicholls met with a peculiar accident at Clarendon. A tame magpie flew up and picked his left eye, and it is feared he will lose the sight, if not tha_ej»-altogother. The Lyttelton Times says that when retrenchment is over, the Government w;U protect the civil service from insecurity. Is not this lockin? the Btabledoor ance stealing the horse ? Will this assurafter- comfort the victims of the civil service blizzard. The entertainment at the Palace Theetre, Greytown, last night was very poorly attended. The programme was gone through in a manner calculated to charm those who were fortunate enough to hear it. The gem of the evening was certainly Bishop's old favourite "My Pretcy Jane." The dance at the Forester's Hall, Greytown, last night, under the auspices of the Greytown Friendly Societies, was a most enjoyable affair. There were between 40 and 50 couples present, £ll being taken at the door. Tho musio was all that could be deßlred, Mrs Butcher presiding at the piano. Messrs Macguire and Trotman aoted as the M.C's.
An unfortunate accident occurred to Miss M. Cimina yosfcerday which prevented her taking part in last niglit'e concert. This popular lady vocalißt, it appears, was rehearsing in the Theatre Royal, when through her dreßS being caugbt in a form she was thrown heavily to the floor. Beside being rendered unconscious for some time, Misß. Cimino sustained several nasty cuts about the face. The appointment of the Rev. J. Dukes as successor to the Rev. W. Bowse in the Maeterton circuit Is received with general rarefaction by the Wesleyan Methodists of this district. Mr Duke is an energetic and successful worker in the Christian cause, and during his former stay in Masterton gained numerous and sincere friends who will gladly welcome his return. In the Rev W. Rowse the Greytown circuit will secure a minister fully devoted to the cause in which he has laboured for so long, and one who takes the deepest interest in the spiritual welfare of his people.
