CORRESPONDENCE.

(TOTHE EDITOE). -i Sib, —In reply to a letter, signed *" Shop Assistant," which appeared in your yesterday's issue, I would point out to him that St Patrick's Day has

-only been recognised as a half holiin Masterton with the exception of last year, when it was conceded to the assistants through it falling on Monday. - It was then pointed out that if the employers would grant a whole, day it would allow the employees to have two clear days, namely, Sunday and Monday. " Shop Assistant" says : " we, as Shop As- ... sistants' baa all made arrangements for a whole day's holiday." Shop assistants in Masterton must possess a large amount.ot impudence to do Buch a thing without receiving tUe consent of their employers. It puts me in mind of the old saying: " give him an inch and he will take a mile." If the shop assistants wanted a whole day's holiday why did they not go ahout it in a business-like manner, and arrange with their employers, say a few days before hand, so as to allow Jt to be thoroughly advertised, save disappointment to the public as well as thetnselves ? "Shop Assistant" would study his employer's business a little more instead ofhis own pleasure, difficulties like these would be easily surmounted. I consider it commendable to the tradesmen referred to in studying the convenience of his customers. Su<® action as "Shop Assistant" has hal the audacity to take upon himself is nil likely to facilitate matters in getting special holidays in future. I an 9 etc., 1 Pbo Boko Public 1 Atfredtoa Road.
