TENUI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A dray containing a load of toitoi was left standing on the Alfredton road about 4 miles from Tenui, where it was wilfully and maliciously set fire to on Saturday last and totally destroyed. It is to be hoped, for the public welfare, that the perpetrator of this outrage will be speedily brought to justice. The dray was the property of the Manawa Station and the police have strong suspicions of the culprit. Occasionally we have flying visits frombookfiends ? and insurance fiends, but the subscription list fiends are always wjth us. Our respected M.H.R, will shortly be asked to take charge of a bill entitled <•' The Subscription List Prevention Bill," and I sincerely hope it will have the desired effect. A run holder in this district hit on a novel metnod of exterminating rabbits. On a part of his run where the" rabbits were thickest, there grew a large patch of manuka scrub covering about three hundred acres. This he had felled, and when dry, collected his rabbiters, and with dogs and guns scoured the surrounding country, driving large numbers of rabbits into the fallen scrub. The wind being favorable, the scrub was then fired, and the few rabbits that came out were quickly despatched. For days after, hundreds of hawks were hovering over the burnt patch, a sure sign of a big slaughter. A party of settlers not a thousand I miles from Tenui, got up a fishing I excursion recently and proceeded to -«t where they aired a boat, Castiepux*., • the nonce all and, forgetting ioi . * -~Khit about the Taueru toll, and the t pest, they had high jinks. One , caught a crab, another caught a j blind eel, a third caught a cold, and , the fourth caught something when he , got home. The Foresters' Sports on St. Patrick's Day promise to be very successful. The liberal programme provided should attract a fair share of visitors from surrounding districts, in spite oi counter attractions. Subscriptions are coming in freely, and it is estimated that at least forty pounds will be available for prizes, in addition to which there is a handsome bronze clock, presented by J, Nathan & Co.
