Auckland, March 8. Tho Board of Education had a Ikcussion yesterday about a leading article appearing in the N.Z. Herald of February 7, criticising the Education System. A copy of the article was sent by the Minister of Education, asking the Boarl to giro him their opinion as to its justice and acouracy, and to offer suggestions for the removal of any defeot whioh had been exposed. Some of the members who spoke considered the statements in the article to be without foundaiton. Eventually the matter was referred to the Inspector to report on. This question was also brought up to-day at the meeting of the Auckland Branoh of the Eduqa» tional Institute, when a similar letter was received from the Hon. W. P. Beeves. There was some discussion, during which the article was somewhat sharply commented on, and further consideration of the matter was then adjourned for a week to allow or a larger attendance of members. *

Inveroauoill, March 7. The Hon Mr McKenzie, Minister of Lands, his received a number of deputations during his visit fjgm Riverton, Orepuki, Waiau, Wyndham Fortrose, and Waikawa. "He is to be entertained at a banquet at Inveroargill on Tuesday, returning North on Friday. The only matters on whioh the Minister gave a decided opinion were brought before him by the farmers, who strongly urged that the importation of ferrets, stoats, and pbleoatff should cease, and that they should not be let loose in the oountry/as th9y are becoming a nuisance. The Minister said that tho vermin _ were only introduced to be liberated in the baok country, and if they were causing loss to the small settlers the matter would have to be looked to. Stoats and polecats, he thought, should not be encouraged. As to the small birds, it was the intention of Government to bring in a Bill throwing the work of destroying them on the County Council and other local bodies.
