ROAD BOARD.

A special meeting of the Eketahuna Road Board was held on Saturday, 14th February. Present—Messrs Matheson (chairman), Fogden, Anderson, Neilson, Dowsett. •Correspondence. From Messrs Faulkner and Morgan requesting the settlers of No. 2 Wellington Special Settlemeut, setting forth a number of suggestiors as to how the money should be spent on roads in their block, asking lor a comprehensive scheme for the expenditure of their Loan and accrued thirds, before auy work be proceeded with, and stating that they have accrued thirds to the amount of £IBO with a donation by Government of £25, making a total of £205. which they wish to be expended on the road and in buildinar a bridge. They stated also that although Mr King was an able officer, the Board left too much power in his hands ; that there were unnecessary conditions in the contracts ; that the height of batter might be lessened; that on the county roads the batter was only Ito 1; that instead of felling 32ft, only enough bush should be felled to make a 12ft track; that the bridges be made narrower; that it was unnecessary to grub up stumps, etc., etc., and that roads and bridges be made in accordance with t the wishes of the settiers. Mr Anderson Btated he would not be in favor of the bridges being made narrower than the formation. Mr Nielsen said that as regards the boulders on County roads, he had never seen any, unless in rocks less than fto one* He would not be in favor of bridges according to their idea. After a considerable amount of discHssion on the matter the Chairman asked the Clerk when was the next election. The Clerk: Next May. The Chairman : Thank goodness. Tenders. The following tenders were received: —Metalling Central Mangaone Road —J Goskin, £1 15 per chain, culvets, £5 10s ; M Ken-ins, £1 Us per chain ; MPBritt, £2 2s 6d per chain; Anders Anderson, £B7 17s 6d, the whole line; P Carr,£B9 15s (accepted). Formation, Hefty's Road—Shehyn & Hambrook, £IOB, (accepted); P C Madison, £125. A letter was received from Messrs Faulkner and Morgan stating that they had an offer to do the work on Hetty's road, 12ft formation 65 chains including metalling 25 chains, 6 in deep, and 12ft wide, for the sum of £6O ; bridge, £l2 19s ; total, £7 2 10s.

Mr Anderson : It would be impracticable to put 12ft of metal on 12ft of formation. It is absurd. I am not in favor of accepting this offer, to-night at any rate. Mr Neilsen was of the same opinion.

Mr Fogden said that the formation would all be done with metal. By what he could understand there was nothing else to form it with.

The Chairman was of opinion that the lowest tender should be accepted that night. It was not fair to contractors the method of calling for tenders so often. It was resolved that Messrs Shehyn and Rambrook's tender be accepted.

The Chairman stated that with reference to the metalling contract on Central Mangaone Road We3t, Mr Fredrickson's tender had not been accepted last meeting, as the tender was too high for the funds in hand. It was left in the Engineer's hands tq arrange with the. contractor to do a lesser amount of work. Mr Fredrickson was agreeable to do the whole of the work and take half the money when the work was done, and wait for the balance for three months. It was resolved that Mr Fredrickson's tender on these conditions be accepted. Mr Fogden called the attention of the Board to the neglect of the engineer in not having the ten chains of road put through in front of Mr Grundy's, Parkville and also called the Board's attention to the contractors for metalling Parkville road, which was let last summer.

It was resolved that the engineer's attention be called to the JQ chains in front of Qrundy's at Parkville, which he has had in hand for some months, and also to the metalling contracts of Anderson and Jacobsen, at Parkville, Resolved that M? King be instructed to oall for tenders for four bridges in the Wellington S S. No 1, and also for works at the old Bog hole, tenders to close on the 25th.

Mr King was also instructed to call for tenders to make gqad the roadintQ the Butt S,S. across the new Bog hole. This closed the general business of the Board.
