PAHIATUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Messrs Dobson and Kennedy's Dramatic and Comedy Company promise us a treat here next week. They play the "Shaughran" on Saturday next, the 21st inst. The really distressing infrequency of visits from a good company will insure them a good house and the Pahiatua residents a genuinely pleasant evening. It is reported that small game such as dogs, cats, etc, are getting " a rough time of it" as an amateur Eifle Club has started into existence behind one of the local stores. The unerring ai m of "Jonas" in particular is productive of intense discomfort to all four-footed trespassers.

Yesterday, impelled by business, I took my way to the Makuri township. Verily, the cry of the weary, which, at last meeting met with consideration at the hands of the County Council, is a just one. It is not exactly the road one would choose for a pleasant ride. The district itself, however, is looking far from unpleasant. It is dotted here and there with pleasant homesteads, the number of which are daily increasing. Mr George Winter is now building upon his section on the Valley Road. Mr Robertson is the contractor for the building which is now in a fair way towards completion. Mr John .Dick's run is also being adorned with a dwelling house. A fact worth noticing in connection with that gentleman's section is the splendid condition and strength of his clover field. The improvements are all being effected personally by Mr Dick and his son, and have evidently been managed with the view of securing a pleasant homestead rather than with any speculative intentions. Indeed this block gives evidence of genuine desire by the selectors for permanent settlement on the land.

The absorbing topic of interest in local politics at present is the approaching election of the Licensing Commissioners. A good struggle may be affected as in all previous yaars at the prospect of which the lawyers are already shaking hands with themselves.
