TOWN LANDS TRUST.
The ordinary monthly meeting ot the Maßterton Town Lands Trustees was held last evening. Present— Messsrs W. Lowes (chairman), H. E, Eton, and B. P. Perry. Au apology for non-attendance was read from Mr J. Graham. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman stated he took it that as there was no application before the Trustees from the deputation of the School Committees the question of grants could not be discussed. It was well understood that applications for grants had to be made in writing. The Treasurer reported a balance in hand of £l4B 15a 2d. Correspondence. From Messrs Bock and Co, Wellington, stating that a seal for the Trust had been forwarded.—The account from Messrs Bock and Co. was passed for payment. From A Ewington, requesting a statement of all amounts paid by her to the Trust since 1889.—The Secretary stated that he had prepared an account, and on the motion of the Chairman it was ordered to be forwarded to the applicant. From D Walton, requesting the assistance of the Trust in enabling his daughter to take advantage of a scholarship recently gained.—A communication from Mr W. H. Jackson, headmaster of the Masterton school, was also read on the subject. —The Chairman said the request was quite legitimate. Proceeds of three town acres were devoted to this special object. He saw no reason why an amount should not be granted from this fund.—The Secretary stated there was now £25 in hand.—On the motion of Mr Eton,, seconded by Mr Perry, it was decided that a subsidy of £lO per year for two years be granted to Mr Walton. From A. J. Rawson, applying for an extension of the lease of the property occupied by him in consideration of improvements made. It was decided that the consideration of the application be held over till next meeting. | From James Ewington, with a similar application. This was also held over. School Grants, The application of St. Patrick's school for a grant of £2O for repairs, etc., was read. The Chairman stated that in ; accordance with a previous resolution it would be impossible to make grants for repairs. It would, however, be i quite legitimate to make a grant to assist in maintaining a pupil > teacher. 1 Mr Eton moved that the consideration of the application be held over . for a full meeting. i Mr Perry seconded.—Carried. r The Voter's List.
On the motion of the Chairman, the night of Friday, the 27th inst., was appointed to hear objections to the voter's list. Ma MoEwen's Seat.
The Chairman slated that Mr McEwen, who had left the district, had not sent in his resignation as a member of the Trust. As his seat did not become vacant for three meetings the Trustees had no power to take action in the matter. The annual election would take place in two months. Ordinaby. It was decided to pay half the cost of asphalting a portion of the footpath in Hall Street, The Secretary was authorised to take proceedings for the recovery of certain outstanding rents. The seal of the Trust was directed to be affixed to an agreement between Mr R. G. Williams and the Trust. . Scholabships, The Chairman stated that as an application for assistance towards taking advantage ot a scholarship had been made they might well now take into consideration the desirability of granting an annual scholarship or two of L3O or L4O. This. might at any rate nettle the difficulty which existed wi'ih the School Committees. Mr Perry thought it was desirable j that the matter should be held over till the school difficulty was at an end. The Chairman stated that he would like to give 8 notice of motion on the subject, but before doing so would be glad to hear the opinion of the Trust on the subject. Mr Eton thought the granting of such scholarships would to a great extent appease the School Committees, certain members of which had an idea in their "noddles 1 ' that they were not receiving justice at the hands of the Trust.
Mi Perry said the question of granting scholarships had his utmost sympathy. He was anxious, however, to see the difficulty with the schools amicably settled.
The Chairman stated that he would reserve hiß notice of motion for a future meeting, and in the meantime would suggest that that the question be thought over by members. The meeting then adjourned.
