[United Press Assooiaton.] Doath of a Football or. Auckland, January 27. James Conway, a well-known footballer, who represented Auckland m the matches with England, Canterbury, and Otago, is dead. His funeral, which took placo to-day, was attended by many members of the athletic clubs. Tho Milford Sound PrTaoaora. Inveroaugill, January 27. John Henry Lewis, lilyth, and John Williams, alias Allen, were charged on remand with escaping from custody at Milford Sound. At. the close of the evidence for the prosecution, Lewis, in reply to the usual questions, said : " All I have to say is that the authorities were as much to blame as we wore for the escape, knowing that I had made a previous attempt a short time befere at Lyttelton.. Nelson, January 27, A cado which excited considerable interest was heard ut the Resident Magistrate's Court to*day, the Picturesque Atlas Company being the plaintiffs. The defence was that the defendant verbally agreed for only a portion of the work. Mr Turnbull, R.M., gave judgment for the plaintiff for the full amount and costs, basing his judgment on the decision of Mr Justice Williams at" Dunedin; and also on his belief that the weight of evidence was on the plaintiff's side.
I Descendants of Tarn O'Saanter. Dunedin, January 27, Mr A. J. Burns, himself a descendant of Burns, the poet, mentioned at the Burns' dinner that there were at present lineal descendants of Tarn o' Shanter in the Colony. In the report of the Directors of the Westport Coal Company, %is reported that the profit and loss account, after deducting expenses',&o, shows a profit of £llO2, which, with the balance of £7290 brought forward, makes a balance to their credit of £8392. The profit made dtNfrg the first six months of the year was satisfactory, She Company would have paid a fair dividend, but the strike cost the Company fully £20,000. Under these oiroumstonoes and the probable necessity of expenditure on the Granity Creek property, the Directors recommend that the balance be carried forward.
