AMALGAMATED FRIENDLY SOCIETIES SPORTS.
The sports held on the Park Oval yesterday under the auspices of the Amalgamated Friendly Societies were not such a success (as far as the attendance went) as the promoters anticipated, probably owing to the many attractions of importance in Wellington and elsewhere, and it was not till after noon that the people began to congregate in anything like numbers. The days proceedings were to have been opened with a procession headed by Pearson's Band, but at the last moment the project was abandoned, and as a number of people were waiting to see the procession this may in a measure account for the paucity of the attendance at the commencement of the sports. The course was in very good order, and under the able direction of Mr E. H. Waddingtoo, secretary, and a large staff of officers. The numerous events were got off without any hitch at all, the decision of the judges in every instance being taken without murmuring, and no protests • being being lodged. The event of the day (the Anniversary Handicap) was won by E. Darley, who was fortunate enough to score three firsts, thus obtaining the possible number of points. Darley is a promising young runner of whom more will probably be heard &t future gatherings. The second money was won by R. Langton, who showed out well with two thirds and a second. W. Brannigan and R. Wallace tieing for third place. Brannigan, who is a stranger in Masterton, proved himself to be a game runner and made a big struggle for what honors he did win, but there is no doubt he was too heavily handicapped to give him a chance or he would have given a better account of himself* The mile Walking Handicap turned out a thorough sell owing to several who had entered not starting. Three started, but the third man quietly walked out before he had gone half a dozen yards, leaving Annan and Hart to stroll gently round and scoop the pool. According to the rulesjas there were three starters first and second money had to be given, and when number three dropped out the onlookers saw the joke and joined the artful peds in the laugh against the Committee. The sack and obstacle races caused the usual amount of fun, but the greasy pig chase was a trifle tame, the pig being neither large nor particularly nimble. The publican's booth under the direction of Mrs Ottaway, and the refreshment and luncheon booths managed by Mr Mr Wickens were well patronised and appeared to be doing good business. The following are the detailed results in the order gone through :
