Masterton School Committee.

| [to the editob.] Sir, —By the report of the last meeting of this committee I find that I used an expression, that while being more forcible than elegant, conveys, as reported, a very different meaning to that intended, and lest the school should suffer, allow me to explain. The Committee is now in debt some £SO. The Secretary, Mr Sellar, has just got authority to arrange for a concert, the proceeds of which were to reduce this debt. As I personally have very little faith in entertainments got up in half hearted fashion, I was anxious that ilie Committee should do something else, favoring as I do a subscription among the parents and friendß of the school which, I think, would probably be supplemented by the Town Lands Trustees. The Committee generally said " Oh, wait and see what the concert will do, better not have too much at once." To combat this idea, I urged that we should still be in debt, that all neoessary repairs to furniture, etc. must stop, or else we must still " coax and bully " the Town Lands Trustees, The phase certainly was not a commendable one, but expressed what I felt at the time. lam not, as the press reports would imply, in favour of either coaxing or bullying, but seeing that we have spent the money—on the school, it is true—we should, as a Committee, make some determined effort to get out of debt. Permit me to say further that I purpose at the next meeting of the Committee to move in the direction indicated, and shall hope to have the ] support of those interested. I am, gtc, Chas. E. Daniell, Masterton, Dec 19,1891. !

To the Editor. Sir.—After the recent raius which have fallea, I would suggest to the civic authorities that they remove the Stagnant sawdust which bespreads Queen Street opposite the Prince of Wales' Hotel. If it is allowed to lie there much longer we shall either have the germs ofj Typhoid or some other fever pervading the atmosphere, or be increasing our responsibilities iq connection with our institutions for the blind* Hoping the normant energy of the Borough Council will be awakened. I am, etc, yEMiaiflUN.
