ROAD BOARD.
A spsciil meeting of the Eketahuna Road Board was held on Saturday. Present: Messrs Matlieson (chair), Anderson, Neilson, Fogden, and Dowsett. The following tenders were received: —Hawera road contract, E. Goodbar, LBS ; John Gaskin, (informal) LBS. It was resolved to call for fresh tenders for the work. CORRESPONDENCE. From Turnor & Go., applying for the use of Road Board paddock for the sum of £lss yearly, on condition that the Board erect a gate to same. Accepted. Mr Martin's tender of LIS 15s for signatures for division of wards was considered. Resolved that the petition be left in the Road Board Office, the members and clerk to obtain signatures. From Mr Wallace, asking permission of the Board to erect a blacksmith's shop on the road, near to the one now occupied by Mr Pelling. Refused.
From Clerk to County Council, re application of Mr Kellihdr, to allow his blacksmith shop to remain on its present site. Resolved, that Mr Kelliher be informed that the shop cannot be allowed to remain on the road line, and that the building will have to be removed within one month,
From Mr Kerrins, stating that he did not agree with Mr King and therefore could not take up the work on the Mans;aone Central road. Discussions here took place as to reducing the width of the road and the batter so as to reduce cost. Resolved to reduce width of road one foot aud call for fresh tenders for same.
Mr Hurgan waited on the Board stating that be had been to Welling* ton and consulted Mr Smith with reference to the Wellington Special Settlement No. 2 contract for bridge and rood at Heftj's, and be thought that when the House met, £250 would be eranted for the bridge. Mr Faulkner, one of the settlers, stated that the road work so far as the batter was concerned could be reduced considerably. He (Mr Faulkner) thought it a great shame such good metal should be wasted by throwing it over the embankmentResolved to call for fresh tenders for the road work only at Hefty's road, the engineer to inspect the road sq as to reduce the batter if possible, and save the metal. It was also resolved that the road be metalled 10 chains from the river. Mr Atkinson waited on the lioard re metalling Central Mangaone road. He thought there should be enough thirds in hand to do the work, the distance being only 20 chains.
The clerk stated the accounts for the road were nearly balanced so far as the thirds were concerned. On looking over the accounts it was found that £l9 was diverted to the Makakihi road.
Mr Berg stated that 12 months ago he objected to his thirds being spent on the Makakihi road. The meeting then adjourned.
