BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Committee MeetingsA meeting of the Gas Committee of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, there being present His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Cullen and Chamberlain. The manager 0 f the gas works reported that 130,608 ft of gas had been consumed for {he month of December.compared with 135,9SGft for the corresponding period of last year. The tank had been repaired at a cost of £7, and was now in a much improved condition. The works were going on as usual. The report was adopted. It was decided to recommend that i committee of the Council interview persons likely to take gas, with a view to iucreasing the consumption. WORKS AND FINANCE. A special meeting of the Works and Finance Committee was also held at which there were present the Mayor, and Crs Hessey, Eton, and T. E, Chamberlain, An application was received from Mr J. Cavanagh, for an extension of time for his oontraots. It was decided that if the Church Street contract was not finished within one month, and the Archer Street by the 28th of February, the Council would undertake the work at his expense. A letter was read from Mr WUliam lorns, asking th§t an app'roaoh be made is tha Ruamahunga river on the Potirau road. The overseer was instructed to attend to the matter.

The Railway Department wrote, regretting their inability to have the cattlo stops on the Upper Plain road removed. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to the Department again on the subject. It was recommended that permission be given the Temperance Hall Trustees to. safe-let a portion of Town Acre 104 to tha Volunteer Fire Brigade for the remainder of their term.
