ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Taratahi Carterton Road Board was held at the Offices, Carterton, on Saturday. Present—Messrs H R Bunny (chairman), N Grace, E W Dorset, J Rayner, W B Allen, GW Deller, H Braithwaite, E Morgan and James Stevens. The minutes of the previous meet: ing were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported a balance at the bank of £272, and also read a general financial statement of eaoh Ward.
Correspondence inwards as follows: —From Mr W C BudMPli ou behalf of ratepayers residfijg oa Coast Road, requesting that the accrued thirds be expended in their looality. On the same subject soma settlers wrote, stating that they had paid some L2OO rent under the per. petual leasing. The Clerk stated that all the monies reoeived accruing from the thirds and fourths had been Bpent in that locality and that the amount received was oniv some LBB.
| From Mr H Wilson, asking permission to cut the grass on the swamp road. Permission was granteoW' The outward correspondence was read from the letterbookandapproved. The Clerk explained that he had, under the instructions of the Board, arranged with Mr Boyle for the erection of the fence along the road acquired by the Board through the Middle Run at 12s Gd per ohain, On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Braithwaite, the Clerk's action was approved of Accounts amounting to Ll4B 19s 7d were passed for payment. Mr Deller moved aud Mr Braith. waite seconded that Mr Morgan be allowed to expend Ll9 in repairs to Brooklyn road. The luaeting then adjourned. Straaje 111-treatment of a Wlfc. A strange affair ha 3 come to light at Balhannah, South Australia. A man named Closholm, living in thab township, recently leased a garden at j Tiers. He and his family continued to reside at Balhannah, but a report gained ground that he had his wife, who was not quite sane, shut up in a. cottage on the property which he had leased at Tiers. The other day thee curiosity of a lad prompted him tovisit the cottage. He found it w»s> boarded up, and he heard someone stirring inside in one of the back rooms. He wrenched off a board from the window, and found that a . woman was fastened in the room. She presented a most pitiable spectacle, being almost destitute of clothing and in a filthy condition. Police Constable Ryder lost no time inreachingthe imprisoned woman, whom he found to be in a worse condition than had been reported, and perfectly ravenous wit Ii hunger. He obtained a warrant released and took her to Woodside where she was examined by Dr Esau, before Mr Robort Drummond, JP, He asserted that he could do nothing with her at home, and bad therefore, taken her to a separate house. H e further stated that he gave her fowl two or three times a day and remained! in the house at night. The woman* ..._, has been sent to the asylum, although in some respects she appeared to \,o qu te rational when being exao>'ned The police are enquiring into Glosholm's conduct, and w*.ll proceed against him at the first fc'a court day
