(Per United Press Association), Pigeon Flying MatchCiiristchukch, January 5. A race from Wellington, the second flown under the auspices of the Christchurch Pigeon Flying Club, was decided on Saturday last. The birds were despatched by the Takapuna on Friday afternoon, under the care of Mr A. S. Moys, chief officer, who liberated them at the Wellington wharf at 9 a,m. The weather when they were let go, was fine and clear, with a moderate north west gale, which afterwards increased to a stiff nor'wester, telling against last time. The club consider the fly the most severe test of a bird's staying capabilities, end the race resulted in a tie for Mr A, Smith's Vauxhall and Sedau, covering the distance, over 205 miles, in 5 hours 59 minutes, making a velocity of 1003 yards a minute, with Mrs D. Parker's Tabtalus and Carbine second, doing a velocity of 1001 yards. One ot the second birds was the winner of this nice last year, and (lew the distance in 5 hours 54 minutes. The birds now go to Nelson, whence a race will be flown at an early date.

Acciaenta and. Fatalities

Invercaruill, January 3.

A fatality occurred last night to a driver named Aspray of the last car from Gladstone. The night was very wet, and there was no one on the platform with him, and how the accident happened is unknown. He had a habit in bad weather of sitting sidelong on the splashboard, and it is supposed that ho dropped the reins and fell over in the attempt to grasp them. The ear wheel bad gone over his jaw and throat, and he must hr ve died instantly. The deceased was not discovered tiil the horses ran into another car while shunting into the stables. Aspray was the son of a widow, and was very popular. He had been in the service since it started, i ght years ago.

Abundance of Work.

Westport, January 8,

There is a promise of abundant of work m this district during the current year. Tenders are called for the Staiths extension aid the Mokibinui railway. Harbor dredging will be taken in hand as soon as the big dredge arrives from Lyttelton. Tenders for the Argyle water race extension will be called at the end of the present mouth. The plans for the loading basin (a big job) are in a state. It is also rumored that the Westport Coal (Jo. and the Westport Wallsend Co. will call for tender shortly for the construction of inclines ou. their Granity Greek and Ngakawau properties respectively. Hall and Co. and J Mitchell are both running coaches on the Nelson West Coast, line.
