1 A Spieler Boforb tlio Ootttt. ' John Robertson was' charged in the R. M. Court this ihorningboforc ' Mossra-B Boys and : Wll Beethani, J.'sP., with attempting to rob John Montgomery of three Xl' notes on the morning of December 28th. Mr/ : Bunny appeared for the accused. , . , Sergeant Price stated that the accused was at tho ltoyal Hotel on Saturday in company with a number of spielers, Mr Montgomery was also present and was waltzing about with the I 'ddcnsud,- when the latter put his hand in his pocket, A number of persons present seeing ',-'. * this, followed tho accused, who was eventually arrested by Constable Cashion at a boarding-house. John Montgomery, farmer, deposed to having loft homo at ton o'clock on Saturday night with four £1 notes, one of whioh he changed. On returning to his homo on the night in nuesiion ho called at tho Hotol,but he did not romombor Shaving met tho accused. His'money was in his breast pocket. JOhnHines, laborer, deposed that. ho was at the Royal Hotel on Saturday night and saw Montgomery thore, The accused was there and was in company with a crowd of spiolera, He Baw tho accused put his hand in Montgomery's pocket, and bring it out closed, A few minutes afterwards the spieler crowd cleared down the-Jtreet and witness and others followed them, They went into a boarding-house, and refused to admit witness, who then informed the police and pointed Out the accused, The accused was afterwards To' Mr Bunny; Thought the accused was a spieler because he saw his. hand in. Montgomery's- pocket, About thirteen' or fourteen" could have ( seen wbut was going on, Charles Warner, compositor, doposed that he' was in the Royal Hotel on Saturday night last in company wiUi the last witness, and saw the accused put his hand in ■ Montgomery's pocket, and take out ~ something. A number of thoso fg present were spielers, He followed , the accused to the boarding house with the rest, , Frederick Hocldoy corroborated the evidence of the pre vious witnesses, Waltor Bailliealso gave evidence, Mr Bunny contended that no case. had been proved, Montgomery not: having lost any money,' \ The Bench, alter a short retire- ' ment, convicted tho accused, and ■ discharged him with a caution, advising him in future to keep his hands out of other' people's pockets.
