Street.—lt was resolved to-call- for tenders for Btumping ana enlarging culverts in the street, and th& Overseer was instructed to have the' fence moved back. ■ Committee Meeting. Tho report of the meetings of the Works, Finance, Gas and Library Committees were read and confirmed.' The report of the meeting of the Fire Brigade Committee was also read,
. 0r Dixon stated that at the meeting of this Committee he had' suggested that a competent engineer be engaged to consider the praoticabihtyofMr Benall's water supply scheme. Mr Benall, however, would hear of nothing in this direction, and the matter had therefore dropped. . The report of the Committee, as read, was adopted, • . ■ . Borough Carting. Mr H. Dixon waited on the Council and complained that the Overseer had engaged carts'in his absence and charged him with the extra cost of the same. After some-" disoussion it was Jeoided that Mr Dixon be refunded .the extra charge. "Deputation,: ■ Messrs HoKaway arid Carpenter: as trustees. waited upon. the Council with reference to the leaso of the Temperance Hall property, • Mr Holdaway, after submitting tho lease, slated that the Trustees of the Hall proposed to ask the Council to take over the portion of the property applied for by the .Volunteer Fire Brigade, and to grant an extended lease for the whole of the property. ' It was decided to request the trustees of the Temperance Hall to mike a formal application in writing for the extended lease, Water Supply, Or Dixon moyed that a competent engineer be employed to report upon the beet means of procuring a water supply for fire preventive purposes. The supply of Mr Renallwasnot satisfactory, and he considered this the only way out of the difficulty,. The Mayor: This would be only spending ilO 10s for no purpose. Cr Dixon contended that the work was yery urgent.
Cr Gapper seconded the motion pro firm, but asked if; the,' general funds of tho borough' could be devoted fo this purpose. Ha did uot think they could, Tho question was, in his opinion, one of ways and means. The only way to get the work done was for residents to memorialise tho Council. . & El Chamberlain suggested the sinking of wells iu various parts of the town. , The Mayor supported the sugges-' tion of Or Chamberlain. Cr Dixon could not Bee bow a sufficient force could be procured from wells. The report of Mr King upon the subject of i supply should be placed before the public, The motion was put and declared lost on the voices,' General. CrCullen suggested that the lar for asphalting be roiled, as in other places, before being placed on the footpaths,-As the method now adopted waa proving satisfactory, no action wbb taken. CrEton called attention to the fact that the Salvation Army were obstruotingthe thoroughfare in Perry staeVand no action" had been ? k f *>? the police, He would move that the Town Clerk writo to the police on the subject. . Or Chamberlain said his horse, had been frightened one day by tho, beating of the drum, and he was nearly put over a fence. Cr Clapper said he had heard of several complaiuts on tho subject' CrCullen seconded tho motion, which was put and carried, CrEton drew the attention of tho Council to the fact that a breach of the by-laws had beeucreatod by Mr W. Perry's horses being driven through tho streets nighl and moramg. Cr Dixon said horses were also driven through Worksop road every afternoon at furious pacos. It was decided to diw[ }he attention of the Inspector djffoisances to the matter, and unles/le nuisance is. abated the license to horse-owners,, be rescinded. ' .; ' Bannister Street, '. The following tenders were received for the construction, of road and footpath in Bannister-street •—' AL.Keivua, £7B percoad and lfiaper chain for footpath- (accepted); J. Oavaii-b, £Bl6aper chainfor road and £llos for footpath. , ■ Or Gappor moved that" the Town Clerk be instructed, to write to' property-owners advising them to accept the tender'for forming footpath, aait.was exceedingly low.-- ' Cr Eton seconded-Carried, ."-'• The' Council then adjourned, ■
