The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1890.

It is a satisfaction to know that on Friday the Wairarapa district, which inplndes two great electorates, will do its.duty to Jfey Zealand by fo(.urrfing Messrs Beetharn and IJuchanan as its Parliamentary representatives. We are of the opinion that no petty personal ambitiw/po unworthy craving for place and power,; actuated either Mr Boothani, or Mr Buchauan in seeking ' le-eleotion to their old positions, .Both are so fortunately circumstanced that a seat in Parliament iß'imnecessary to establish their position as leading colonists or to enhance their-fortunes. Indeed, tho responsibilifje§.of an M.H.B. involve a greqt amount -of drudgery and entail a considerable sacrifice of both health and. comfort, and a seat is not worth fighting for were it not for the higher aim and purpose which determines a man to serve the colony and {o promote the welfare of thousands of his fellow men, It is high aims and purposes of this naturo which cause men in the position of Messis Beotham and Buchanan lo devote thou- best energies to building up, not their own fortunes, but tho good of others, There is in politics as in every other service an esprit dc corps which compels those who have once-enlisted themselves in a cause to fight its battles and to place themselves at the disposal of the party with which they are associated in iw hour of need. Were they to give to their own privafp affair's the time and attention they pay to those of the state they could undoubtedly Beoure high positions by the ability, experience and other special qualities which they undoubtedly possess, and which would secure success to any undertaking to which they devote thomselves, They have, however, chpsen to give the major portion of their time.and energies to the public, and the colony Is tko gflwcp' \j their choice. The return of men lib Messrs Beethatn and Buohanau to Parliament is the best guarantee we can have for the future prosperity of the colony and for the welfare of : all sorts and.flonditipns of peeple wj)o make up its population, }t on JTrjctay next men ot 'their stamp, and we are proud that there are. men of their stamp in all parts of the colony, are returned in .considerable numbers to he H,9i)sewe«ai)fe§Un4b.et|)an^

It is mistake,.too, to suppose that riieir lik Messrs Bcetham and Buchanan ar not in touch' with the working mini do not-represent his interests,' andar not anxious to do all -it -their powc to promote hi 3 welfare. Both of ou coming representatives commence their careers as working BettlnrSj na could earn a Hvinj* to-morrow, if, tlw were put to it, ,by the.labour of tliei hands. But the working men in thi district, who for twelve or twent years prist have been most intimate!, jssooiiitsd with Messrs Beetlntrn' ari l Buchanan in all sorts of-relatiohshi in matters of business, arid in matter )f friendship, speak woll of thorn think well of them, and will vote fo ihem now as they have often done i: the past. Messrs' - Beotham tin Buchanan will owe their success a '.he poll to working lien's votes am 10 greater compliment can bo paid t km, Were the'working men againa ihem they would most utdoubtedf je defeated, but we know, and al jarties in the community know tha working men all ove- the.'distrio ire their avowed supporters, It' i ,his consideration, which has mad -lieir political opponents so anxiou ,o,ilood the rolls with ; hundreds o iwnggers and strangers 'whoat th icason of the year find tempbrar unploymeut - amongst us, : . But tli wto of the birds of passage; nuruorou bough it be, will not counteract .6 iffanip the ,vote o£ the .veeiden working men'. Never have, we fel Tcater confidence as to the result c i general election in promoting th lest interests of the colony and of th listrict than ou the present occasion The two great electorates of th IVauarapa will do their duty, and ii ettlers throughout Now Zealand. are qually loyal to its welfare we shall oon see good times for one and all \ this Britain of the South,

Mr A,G.Thoinpson, who has jus l returned from Sydney, informs us tha* he met several old Wairarapa residents, aniongstothersbeing the well known and gonial Wickorson. This gontleman is, according to accounts, making his (rile, and during the late strikes shone conspicuously as a "free labourer." An enthusiastic supporter of Mr A W Hogg offered this morning to bet live to one that Mr G Beotham would not poll 600 votes more than his candidate. The wager, wm promptly taken up by a supporter of Mr G Beetham, Tho makers of the wager agroed to "pan 1 ," io, to refrain from voting, Tho attention of the Borough Inspector should be drawn to the filthy condition of tho Borough water-tables at the present time. They have beon half filled with metal, and are now the rocepticlo (or all kinds of garbage, which must surely, with the heat of summer, breed germs of discaso' and thus endauger the health of tho public. " An impartial new chum," writing t° us from Eketaliuna, expresses an opinio" that there were 150 persons present a Mr Hogg's Ekotahuna meeting. Hoi 8 mistaken, thoro wero but 94, Mr Hog»< who nailed his flag to the mast at 300, won't thauk tho "impartial 1 ' one for his oatimatoofloO. -

The late Ngutaoro, tho old Maori chief who died on Saturday last, is, we understand, to be hiiried at tho Blaok Bridge, Wajcluno, this afternoon. Jfoarly two hundred Nativee had already gathered there when one of our reporters passed at about ten o'clock this morning, The body _ of Ngatuore,' which is of immense am and is abnormally heavy, was then, in a hugo pofjui wWi to lying on the vorandah in' front of his honsb in full view of the road. This rcoepticlo seemed to bo fully seven feet' Ion? and two feet deep, for, a) remarked, tho old Maori was in his lifetime a very big man, Tho ladies of St Mark's Guild held a bazaar in.the Assembly Iluoms at Cartorton yesterday afternoon and evening, whereat thoy disposed of needlework and fancy goods, the product of their own charitablo industry, with tho object oi benefiting the funds of the church, in view. The attendance was only.moderate, a shower of rain in, tho afternoon somewhat discouraging visitor?, The receipt of oyer Beventeon poinds, whiph was the total income, must therefore under the oiroumstanoes be regarded as Highly satisfactory. Thoro was a general stall, a toy stall, a refreshment buffd and a Christmas tree, all in charge of various ladies of tho congregaticn and their assistants, Musio, rendered at intervals, helped to make tho proceedings cheerful. A concert in aid of tho funds of the Alfredton school was given tn tho Public Hall on Friday last, The evoning
