The Mauriceville Eketahuna Match
. (To the Editor). " ■ Sir,—Permit dig to say a few words re the MHiii'icevillc-Ekotaliuna Criokot Mutch played oq Saturday last, In the first place tho report as published in your paper to aay the ieast of ib was misleading, Tlio fact ij, the Mauriceville team won the match by several wickel,v and although. I endorse everything your correspondent writes in your paper of the 27th with regard to treatniont, I must confess that I for one do not like the inference that both your 'report and letter by one of the team would imply viz, that the Mauriceville teanv was a combined one of Wairarapa as such is not tho cise, as all the team' belong' to tho Mauricevillo club and I believe reside in the district. Yours, One of the Team, (To tho Editor.) Sir Philosophers and scientists havo asserted that every man is on some particular point more or less a monomaniac, and, according to the disposition, surroundings, and character of the individual, so does the mania differ. Some people have a. mania for exaggerating facts to such an extent that they become absolute falsehoods, and as time rolls on tho frequent repetition of these fallacies so affects the afflicted one that he actually believes his own fables. Now, judging from tho tone taken by Mr A W Hogg of late, Lhisjmust be his particular little failing. He.lias cast bis-magnifying e.ve over the thiuly attended bush' meetings, and 10l the numbers havo ! doubled, and in some cases even trebled, Afterwards when these trifling- discrepancies! have been pointed out, ho has risen in wrath and shown us how badly hois affected by loudly declaring that his. statements aro correct in-spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Poor Mr Hogg, ho has now reached the stage of believing his own exaggerations, What a sad ' spectacle 1 How, indeed, are the mighty fallen I This must be so,' for surely even Mr Hogg would not ' go the.complete animal and endeavor to delude.us by.-,deliberate falsehoods 1 What a boon would bo conferred on the struggling farmer if Mr Hogg would cast his magnifying eye ayer their small flocks so that 94, would become 800, and 24'. grow into GO. This would more than, cover all losses, only I fear that when we came to sell on Mr Hogg's count w6 should find something radically wrong. It may bo argued that these aro only small and minor points, but admitting suclt to be the ease I would ask any sane and honest man whether confidence ought to be placed in a person' whose statements iu minor thiugs aro so unreliable, or whether suclt a one can bo expected to not with justice and rectitude in matters, more weighty matters, on which tho welfare of the country depends. I think, Bir, that, the sth of December will prove con* clusively that tho electors of this district still prefer the Naked Truth.
