It is stated that before tho first meeting of tho Irish party was hold Mr Gladstone advised Mr Justin M'Oartby to suggest to tho party that Mr Parnell should retire. Mr M'Carthy, howevor, nejlooted- to carry out Mr Gladstone's instructions, • and as a consequence the Paroellites elected Mr Parnell aB leader of the party, they being in ignoranco of the views held by Mr Gladstone on tho ' question.
