The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1890.
Foetune has favored the burgesses of Masterton, and they have a wider choice of candidates fop J,he Mayoral office than was anticipated. Eyafl an old councillor has been nominated, and this was all that was wanted to pm!# the eleotion a satisfactory pont, est. Burgesses )#ye a selection be.tweeji an astute jipl agsnt, a shrewd.lawyer, and-a wideawake farmer, and they ought tg be satis'lril, As 5 njle these oprt of .elections - t I 'n oaVty jipfts, 91)4 |t will work out -.1 thatMrfeey probably be assume " - ((amirepresents the majority in tuo . oil and Mr Pownall the minority; the latter the champion of the fienallites and the former of the anti-Renalhtes. Mr Dalrymple will probably be classified as an independent candidate, and not as the delegate of either party, Whether an outsider who does not ally himself with either party can poll well in such a contest is questionable, but if there are a considerable number of burgesses in the community who are indifferent to party interests Mr Dalrymple giveß them an opportunity of recording their independence, If the several candidates happen to' entertain any decided intention of doing the town a little good by lifting it out of the slough of despond in which it has too long lingered, we should prefer to see the choice of a Mayor determined upon the expressed aims and objects of the candidates rather than on a party basis. If they do not happen to possess any views for improving the position of the town, or do possess tbem and are too modest to express them, the burgesses will have to vote according to personal and party liking. We hope, however, the candidates will do justice to. the intelligence wliich they iiiidpubtedly possess, by submitting to'the burgesses what they intend to do if they should happen to be elected. If the Mayoralty is to be the reward of past services it ought certainly to be given to Mr Hessey, but if it isto be given to tljs candidate who is most likely to advance % interests of the town, the award is operand eaplj ojie lias au opportunity of proving that ho is the right man for Masterton. We are not at all ?orry to se t e a comparatively young man lilio Mr

Peopl ' 0 6M young men coming to the rout occasionally, especially if tliey' possess useful public qualities.lt is quite possible ?that'Mr Pownall may have some new.;ideas on the. question 0 municipal: administration, or it iiwy .bo also, possible that he is simply the echo of the old sentiments of'his suppler, Mr A. \V. Kenall. If it should be found; that the former be the case his advout into the municipal arena will be an advantage; and tend to either fuse or break up old municipal party lines,
