The annual show in connection, with the Wairarapa; and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society was held iu trio Show grounds, Carterton, : i yesterday, under the most favorable oircnmßtances. The weather was an exception to the general rule, and was nil that could be desired, the heat being tempered by a pleasant breeze. The attendance, probably as a result otthefine weather, was much larger than, on:. proyiouß .years, and-it is estimated that over 4000 people were on. the grounds. Those included visitors from Wellington and all parts of the Lower Valley, besides between three or four hundred persona from. Mastevton and surrounding districts, The day was recognised as a general holidiy in Carterton, which town wm quite necessarily enfeie. A convenient train sorvico was provided .by the. Railway Department, and was tnken full advantage of, The show as a whole was a thoroughly representative pastoral and agricultural exhibition, the keenest competition being displayed i,i every class. The officers of the Society worked energetically as n body, and they are deserving of credit for the success attending their efforts, Particularly to the indefatigable Secretary, Mr E W Dorset, is due great praise for the way in. which he carried out the: arduous duties pertaining to his office. The Carterton Town Band rendered lively musical selections during the day, and they were assisted in 'their efforts to diarni the public by a splendid Italian.string bund, Although MY J. L. Kimbell and his staff were kept hard at it all day in their publican's booth, ietailins! liquor of every description, it is ■ with pleasure"' we record the fact that only ono solitary drunk camo under our notice. Constables LVby and Ecclefon were on (ho ground, but had absolutely nothing to do. The relreshment booth was run in his usual style by Mr A, L, Whyte, and was well patronised. A Kist-olass luncheon was provided for the stewards and judges, and tlie attention paid to all by the popular Mr G, W. Duller cannot bo passed unnoticed. Cheap John was again to the foro with his "potato peeler," and the usual opportunity wa3 afforded' the specu : lative public for investing their shillings at the tables of fortune. Tho grand stand and lawn were well patronised, and a pleasing feature of the whole show on the largo attendance of ladies, Passing was to the exhibits, in
Hohses iliere wns acnpitalahow. Tbo decision of tho Mastcrton judges was reversed in thoroughbred stallions, Mr W Corlett's Master Agnes being awarded first against Mr A Lyfc-wl's Forester, In young thoroughbreds Mr P F Tancred was again one of the chief exhibitors anil was very successful. Mr R Tilson's Premier carried off first and champion prize foi' draught ntallion,' Mr J.Tocker's Avon being Becond. Mr John Hessey was again successful with his favorite mare Darling, being awarded first prize and gold medaL 'This exhibitor also took a second for | a yearling teal, Messrs W C Buchanan, F Gray, and J Tooker woro also leading exhibitors in draught stock. Tho miscellaneous class drew considerable competition, and the judging was anything but a pleasant duty to porform. Tho greatest interest was displayed in the thirteen and oleven Stque wejght carriers, There was also a large mpber of entries in cobs. Miss Vallauce's Sir Tatton wns-chosen for first place out of thirteen ladies hacks entered, aad Miss Gallagher's Puhaknk second. In ponies, cavalry hoises, and every other miscellaneous class there was good competition, The Leaping Contest
did not take placo till, about 5.80 p.m., and although it waa undoubtedly the event of the diy, numerous com'plaints were made that it did not cqme off earlier, as numhera were on aojonntof the lato hoqp debarred trotu witnessing it, Tbo usual amount of fun was afforded tho publio at the cupensg of t||o riders, many of whom oiuio to grief at tho water jump, Mr VV. Bid will's Timothy wa* again '■ viotorioii?, the same owner's Canute being second. Both horses were ably ridden by Mr F. Peoroe. It was thought by, many that Mr T, Thompson's Karatea ahould at least have been second, but the judges, who no dq||bt were iusliljeij jri tliejr aptlan, gave qiin qnly third, OmiiE. Tho Oarterton show is always noted for its grand exhibition 'of cattle, and this year there waa no exception to tho rule. Tho principal exhibitors were Messrs D. McMastor, J.'P. Kussell, w; 0. Mianan, W. B. Allen, and H, D. Crawford,, l|r tqok flrst, jirip" and gold modal with his Shorthorn bull Suramei'ton's Duke. Mr J, P, Russell was vei-j successful in fat cattle.
