As a matter of course the spieling fraternity was well represented, and it was amusing to Bee the clever way in which they "had" soiho of our • country boys. A number of games were indulged in, and the familiar voice of "Cheap John" assured us that not only was he sole agent in the world for tho renowned "potatoscraper," but for every other commodity that could be named. A nasty accident occurred during the-jumping contest, when a rider named T. Winteringham fell from his horse and was trampled underfoot. He'was carried off Che field, and an examination by Drs McLoughlm and McLenuaa revealed the fact' that n severe comp-ession of the chest and other injuries had 'been sustained. The day's proceedings were brought to a close about five o'clock. Great credit is due to tho secretary (Mr Walker) and his assistant (Mr Seller) for the clever mannor in/which they, in conjunction with the officers of the Association, carried out the arduous duties dovolving upon them, and it iu only in justice that wo say not a single hitch occurred during the whole day. Hohses. In thoroughbred horses over four years, there was a very poor show numcrcally speaking, only A Lyford's Forester and W. forfeit's Master. Agnes being shown, The forraor, which is a fine chestnut, seven years of age, was awarded first prize, Mr Jf, P, Tancred's yearling colt by Administrator took a first prize, as did also ,his roan yearling filly by Piscatorious, dam Princess Koyal, ithe latter also securing Mr Cave's special prize of ,£lO. Timcred's mare Princess Eoyal, whose progeny throughout the district is so well known, secured a first prize, and a roan colt of the same owner by Administrator, received si.-uiiar merit. For the best dry brood mare Mr T, D. Thompson was awarded first and Mr Vennell second, The show of draught stallions over four years was not at all up to expectations, only two horses being shown i in this class. Of these Mr W Miller's Glengarry, bred by Mr A, Cockburn, and well-known throughout the district, was victorious, For a threeyear old colt it would be hard to beat Mr Q. Watson's Nil Desperandum, ' bred by Mr H. Mitchell, of Oamaru, aud it may be safely said that he was a greater attraction than any other j stallion on the ground. For a three' year old gelding Mr Taplin was awarded a first and Mr Fraser second, Mr J, McGregor exhibited a line two-year-old colt, for which he ■ got tt first prize. Mr J, Hessey was , successful in the class for yearling I colts, and two-year-old fillies, and ; also took first with his well-known ' mare "Darling," Mr J, M'Gregor , took first for dry mare, MvF. Gray' i fitst for yearling filly, and Mr fl. s Vaughan first for yearling gelding or i colt. There were several exhibits of I plough horses, Mr J, M'Gregor taking i the principal prizes. Mr Stephen ! Tho miscellaneous class ol horses was well represented, i In ponies there was a good show, Mr , T, A. Weston's King Cob taking first , for entire under H hands, Mr T. P, • Lett and Mr W. judges, lliut the favorite was awarded first prize, was Mr Bidwill's Timothy, ridden by Mr E, Pearce, Which cleared every hurdle, without tlw least trouble. Mr W : Green's Eoindeer jumped very well, and was a good second, There wcis no doubt that Timothy was well ridden; and the prize for best rider .being awarded F, Pearce was quite in accordance with the general feeling, ' Cattle, As wo have previously said, the show of cuttle was not up to the mark. The reason for this must now be obvious to all, It is a great pity that the haloliet of petty jealousy could not be buried, and every S6ttler in the North Wairarapa combine to make the Masterton show what it really should be, one of the best in the colony. It is therefore to bo regretted i that at yesterday's exhibition the entries of some of the largest cattle breeders in the district were conspicuous by their .absence, However, this cannot now bo helped, and those v wlio did exhibit are to be congratulated upon the quality of cattle shown,' For three-year-old shorthorn bull Mr F. Gray was again successful with his roan Yeoman bull Taiwhanga. Mr T. L, Thompson secured first' for a two-year-old bull, and Mr. C, F. Vallance a similar award for a yearling. Mr 0 F Vallance's roan shorthorn cow, Helen Ashridge, took first* in its class, and was much ada>iredr Mr T L Thompson's heifer also received the highest merit. In grado shorthorn there was a fair show, the principal prize taker beingMr F Gray. Mr John Hessey's purebred Ayrshire bull Prince Charlie, bred by tho exhibitor, which secured a first prize, is a huge beast, and was favorably commented upon by all who saw him. There was only one exhibit in polled Angus, Messrs Lowes & loins' The General, whose pedigree is a good one, and who, from his appearance, quite justified the action of the judges in awarding him first, Mr W. Falconer's Alderaey bull was in, good show condition, and was also a prize taker.' There was again keen competition in the class for dairy cows, and some dissatisfaction , arose over the judging. It is said that the conditions wore not complied with by all exhibitors, fie this as it may, there is no doubt but that Mr J loms' Spot, which took first, is just the kind of cow which would make dairying a success. Mr R Johnston's Lily was given second, There was only half-a-dozen exhibits of fat cattle, Messrs Lowes &• lorns taking two firstsfor cows, and Mr A W Cave first for a bullock. SHEEP. This year the number of entries in sheep was muoh larger than usual, the quality generally being exceptionally good, and the condition fine. Competition in some classes was very close, but the. judges seemed to have carried out their duties in a thoroughly fair and impartial manner, leaving no room for dissatisfaction. In Lincolns Messrs Perry Bros,, John Bayner, and J.. Macara were the largest exhibitors, Perry Bros, taking Ist for one ram under eighteen months, with a splendid animal of enormous size. In two rams under 18 months J Bayner took Ist, aud J Macara 2nd. J Eayner also took Ist prize for one ram over 18 months, and in several other sections secured honors amounting to no less than 5 firsts and 4 second prizes, thus securing most points for Lincolns in the wool. Mr Bayner has prpyed himself a fliost successful breeder, and stands with an almost unbeaten record for the last five Lincoln lambs at foot, Macara took Ist prize with a yery pretty pen, Perry' 'fcros. alsq scoring several spconijs jn tlijs class, It; Leigesters T L Thompson k Op,, were the only exhibitors their three entries taking two first and a second. In Bomney Marsh, Farquhar Gray's exhibits shone out conspicuously, taking four and eight second prizes, with some grand sheep, A Walker secured a first with a ram under 18 months, the remaining honors being fairly divided between H H Wolters jnd W B Allen, the latter obtaining three'ijwt and two aeooiitj, ajifl the fo'rnicr ftvo'^rsi 1 and "tw6 seooiid, Williams °aiid Beetliam" anif'A'iej! Caselberg and Co,, and attracted considerable attention during the day.' The.-Lowdown Binder' is a remarkably simple l and compact " machine and,', like the McCormick, has under* gone saveral important improvements combining lightness and;, durability for working in very long grain. The 1 roar of the machine. is left open, and : a chain carriage is attached to the back of the platform, All the levers are right alongside of the driver's . seat, where adjustments are easily . managed, Mr Banger, the expert, informs us that the Buckeye Lowdown won the Premier prize of Australasia, the Viotorian Grand National gold medal, first awards : and ppeoial mention at the Melbourne' exhibition, awards at the South Seas Exhibition of Dunedm, and other first honors. 0 L Becker's patent poison layer was on view, and: obtained a first prize, as did also D Donaldforbestwirestrainer, Another very important class, and one ofgreat interest in this district, was the exhibition of wool presses, Messrs''' : Ross and Muir with their Zealandia obtaining first prize and special mention, the second falling to Booth Macdonald and Co. The owners of Zealandia were kept hard at it the whole day showing the working of | their press, which'is simplicity itself, and we are informed that several orders were booked on tho ground. There is very little doubt but that in a short time the Zealandia will make a name for itself far and wide, and it would be indeed hard to beat, In the extra seotion of this class several interesting exhibits were shown, amongst others Beid and Gray's digging plough, G S W Dalrymple's stump extractor (a maohine which will take an important placeastlfS settlers' friendin clearing) and. E. : MoEwen's hand knifegrinder, and hand grass seed sower. Several exhibits by Wilkins and Feild and a good assortment of ropes and lines made by J Butcher (KuripuniV bring a long list to a close. In vehicles Boss and Muir had 8 entries all locally made, obtaining four first prizes, the others beiug highly commended and obtaining i speoial mention. This firm's exhibit of shoes as made and supplied at their establishment also came in for a deal of notice, and their shoeing smith, R Crawford, obtained first prize for the best shod horse, Tl;is - speaks'for itself, ; PRonuOE. .The show in this class was not large. Mrs Buijk and Mrs David Donald obtained Ist and 2nd' prize respectively for some excellent salt butter, B, F. Temple's same being • highly commended. Mrs Buiok also took a first for table butter, Messrs John and Hugh Campbell • carrying everything before them in the- ham and bacon line. MrDaniell, of this town, had on exhibit a quantity ot rough and dressed timber, milled by Messrs A McLeod and Co., of Opaki, A great attraction to both sexes during the show was the really splendid collection of saddlery, harness and leather work exhibited by Mr Elliott in a booth specially fitted up for him, This exhibit was a decided qredit to Mr Elliott and the diptriot,
