The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1890.
On of the trade Unions, a member of the crew of Millar, the Old Man of the Sea who is throttling poor Siubad the toiler, has openly thrown off its allegiance to tho affiliated unions, and to. the afflicted strikers, After this week the Wellington Typographical Association refuses to pay strike levies, and condemns the notion of the Maritime Council, which brought about the present trouble as "irresponsible and 'unwarranted." This act of rebellion breaks down utterly the power of the affiliated unions, and leaves the Maritime 3ounpjl an 'pbjoot of pity ajul pop tempt. Other Me unions will undoubtedly follow tho joad, set by tho Wellington Typographical Association, and there will be a general route all along the line. No doubt tho Typographical Association will be admired for the courago with which it has expressed its opinion on the labor (eaters pf New Zealand, but there is a good deal of the seamy side of human nature inits manifosto. If six weeks ago, at the commencement of the fray, it had spoken the words it has now uttered, it would have displayed real courago, and would prgbftbly -have shortened tho striko as far as Wollingtpn was concerned, it is pot to its credit that it has waited till tho Maritime Council is beaten to hit out at it. Is it not ungenerous to assail the Council when it has clearly lost the stake for whipli it played? A fgiv weeks ago the Maritime Council was strong and vigorous, and .the Typographical Association supported: it, having faith inits power to conquer. Had the Maritime Council won, there would be nothing said about.its "irresponsible and unwarrantable action," but it has lost and anybody may kick it with impunity. The reaction has set in, tho strike fund is exhausted, there is a considerable number of families in dire distress, and the hat has to be handed round in all directions. The labor party now is divided against itself, Mean and contemptible, things aro being 1 said and done amongst its members, and all trust and' cpnfidojioe in
