Outsider Wins. Melbourne, October 18. For the second day's racing of the V.A.T.C, the weather was fine during the morning, but just before the Cu'p was ran rain bogan to fall. There was a very large attendance, fully 25,000 being present, including tho Governor and Suite. The running was in excellent order, though against registering fast time. The bookmakers had all the best of the opening events, Speculation being unusually rife, especially on the Cup, nearly "every starter being entrusted to win a good stake. Vengeance, the winner of the Cup, was lucky in getting a clear run nearly all tho way, whilst Loyalstone, who was second, had to thread his way through the field, Neither Pygmalion nor Singapore were evor prominent during the race, whilst Leopold was only once among the leaders, After passing the winning post bothOakleigh and Plenty fell, but their riders sustained no injury. Vengeance, although starting at a good price, was consistently backed, and Aleck Taylor's party threw in for a very large stake. The following is the result:— Caulfield Cop,—A handicap o 2000' sovs; 1600 sovs of the said sum to go to the first horse, -360 sovs to tho second, and 160 sovs to tho third. Distance, one mile and a half. 141 subs. Mr A. R. Blacklock's Vengeance, Gst 131b (including lib overweight) (Gowan) ..." i Mr S._ Gardener's Loyalstone, 7st 111b (iucluding lib overweight)' (Hayes) 2 Mr Austin's Enuc, Gst 81b (Ganwin) 3

Owing to tho fractiousness of The Serf their woro numerous false starts, but when the flag fell Sir William, Plenty, Bothwell, Tarcoola, and Tho Jebusite were first away, and nt the distance Sir William had a slight advantage,' Then in the order came Bothwell, Tourbillohj Tarcoola, Jebusite, Vengeance, Sinecure, and Loyalist, 'Passing the stand Sir William had a decided lead, with , Tourbillon, Sinecure, Jebusite, Loyalist, Eichelien, and Bothwell as his close attendants. Sweep* iii» round the turn Sir William maintained his advantage, . but Loyalist had displaced Tourbillon of the second position, and then came Sinecure, Vengeance, Tarcoola, , Eichclieii, Bothwell, and Churchill, As the field entored the back stretch, Plenty cut his way through and displaced Sir William of the lead, while Tarcoola ran into third place. This trio were raoing well together, and after a gap oame Tourbillon, Churchill, Vengeance, and Sinecure, At the back of tho course Plenty was still showing tho way, being hard pressed by Tarcoola, who was followed by Jebusite, Sir William, Vengeance, Churchill, and Loyalstonc, Pygmalion was among the ruck at this timo, but at the far turn Loyal, stone and Vengeance could be seen creeping up, Pygmalion also making a forward movement, Tarcoola ihowed well to the fiont as they rounded the turn, and his victory was loudly proclaimed, but Loyelstoue and Veugoance quickly got on terms, and tho threo landed in the. straight together, with Bothwell and Churchill close up. At the distance post Loyalstonc had a slight advantage of Vengeance, and it was at once seen that the finish would be between this pair. So it proved, as the two fought out a desperate finish, and eventually Vengeance (who hails from Ballarat), and had tho outside position, got his nose in front, and, disputing every inch of the way, won by a head from Loyalstone, who ran a plucky horse. Enuc, who had come with a rattle in the straightwas third, two lengths behind Loyalstone, Tarcoola was a fair fourth, Bothwell fifth, Jebusite sixth, Richelieu, Sir William, Little Bernie, and Pygmalion next, Loyalist and Ivy whipping in. Plenty fell after passing the post, and Oaklcigh foil over him, the rider of tho latter receiving rather severe injuries to the head, Time, 2min 38sec.
