MR BEETHAM AT ALFREDTON.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) We wero favorod hero on Tuesday last, October 7th, with a visit from Mr George Boethaui, M.H.E. Mr Boetliam, it appends, notified several settlers of his intention to visit us,' but mistook tho date of mail arriving bore, so until he put in an appearanco on the Monday evening no one was awaro of his .intention, Howover, as Mr Beetham oppressed a desiro to meet any sottbra who liked to come at 4 p.ni, to have a talk on a few matters concerning the place, about a dozen turned up. Mr Beetham statod that as he would meet thorn again in about a fortnight he would not make a Hot speech, and referred to theproposed County loan, flax industry, etc, and also stated that with rogaid to tho College Eeserve, the Governors' wore anxious to let it either as a whole or in sections to suit proposed occupants if a fair offer was made tbem, The mattorof appointing a J.P. for the placo was brought up, and it «as : uointed out that for over two years the pl»co was without any, and settlers merely requiring a paper signed had to go all tho way to Eke< tahuna, sometimes solely far that purpose, Mr Beothara stated that on the eve of an eleotion he always made it a rule to request settlors, where an appointment of this nature was required, to make out requisition, naming those they would reoommond, and said that if tlio settlers desired they could reoommend two and he would see to the matter. After some further conversation on local matters the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to Mr Beetham for his visit,
