The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1890.
.Some'years ago, whon Mr Eenall divided the Borough of Masterton into four wards, wo strongly objected to his quartering, and pointed out that three wards, a central {.nd two suburban areas would, make a more reasonable division, No one ever knew the precise reason which determined Mr Eenall to carry out his quadratic project, and as far as we remember he did not himself consider it necessary to- assign one for it; he simply carried it by a coyp d'etat, and when ho discovered that in practice it was no good to himself or anybody else, lie updid hjs own handiwork, and the town in municipal matters became once more undivided. Now Mr Eenall is talking abcut dividing tho borough again, and this time into three scotioris which we originally favored.: There can be only one objection to the proposal, and that is, if involves a certain amount of expense which {be. towp can ill afford, If any tangible and direct result pan bo expected from tho question of.cost ought not to stand in the way, but if, as on the former occasion, the alteration is effected witiiout fljry direct object in view, other than to plea.sp Mj> genall, then it would be a mistake fo'fak'e action. There, are sepato'jnterjislsin Mastortou «liiob»fP tolerably iveJJ defined, squires watoy, gas, drainage, and firo prevail' o (l l'P' 1 " ances, luxuries in which suburban Maslortonis loss interested, : 'A subdivision which would define these separate interests would bo an advantage it any new project for an efficient water supply or for drainage, were likely to be, considered, But oven then we question whether a three ward division would prove acceptable. A central ward and an outside ward might be laid off which would answer the purpose, but it is possible that two wards might be deemed insufficient. If so, the central ward would be handicappedif two outside wards wero created against it, and the representatives of the bulk of the rates would form a' minority in the Council. This ! difficult) could he beat mefc'by .const!- , tuling two ■ town wards.-. and.' two l suburban ;wurda.
